17 Things We Learned From The Star Wars: Battlefront Trailer

by Bryan Vore on Apr 17, 2015 at 12:17 PM

The Star Wars Celebration festival is happening right now and with it comes tons of new Star Wars details. Not only did we see the new trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, but today brought a brand new trailer for Star Wars: Battlefront as well. We watched it over and over to pull out all the little details. If you haven't seen it yet, watch it first before we get down to business.

The opening shot shows a star destroyer looming in the sky. Before you get too excited at the prospect of flying into space and shooting at it, DICE has confirmed that outer-space battles are not in this game. The full focus will be on planetside skirmishes. That doesn't mean you won't pilot ships, however, as you'll see coming up.

Most of the trailer takes place on the forest moon of Endor. You can see ewok structures up in the trees, and if you look close enough you can see some running around. The whole trailer was made using developer DICE's Frostbite engine, which is used on Battlefront itself. With cinematic angles and effects, the trailer looks amazing, but we're skeptical how the final game will look once 40 players are running around shooting at each other. The very end of the trailer reads, "Frostbite game engine footage representative of PlayStation 4. Not actual gameplay."

It's great to see speeder bikes will be in the game. We're curious as to how they'll function in battle or if they'll mostly be used to get troops close to objectives quickly before you hop off to take care of business.

DICE made it obvious that players will be able to select female character models when firing up matches.

Various alien races should also be in the mix as seen here with the Sullustan rebel soldier. Most will recognize the species from the jovial Nien Nunb character in Return of the Jedi.

Next page: See more vehicles, weapons, and a certain sith lord.

It wouldn't be an Endor fight without AT-ST's. DICE explains that vehicles like these can only be obtained through a power-up system on the battlefield.

This portable dome shield protects multiple troops from devastating AT-ST fire. Think the Titan shield from Destiny.

The Sullustan trooper confirms both the presence of jetpacks and bazookas in the game. Also, AT-STs will go down with one well-placed heavy shot to the head.

Changing things up from the movie, AT-ATs will also join the fray. It's unclear if multiple players will have to team up to control this thing or if a single person can wrangle it. Take note of the lighting from the red laser blast.

Since AT-AT armor is nearly impenetrable, players will have to call in Y-Wing bombing runs to take them out at satellite stations.

The famous dark lord of the sith appears to wreck some dudes. Like specialized vehicles, legendary characters like Darth Vader are obtained through collecting power-ups in the environment. It's said to be like taking on a boss battle when you fight one of these special characters.

Next page: See Hoth, Tatooine, Sullust, and a special ship shown in the closing shot.

The final stretch of the trailer zips around to other planets in the Star Wars galaxy. We all knew Hoth would be in this, right?

Tatooine appears in a canyon battle between X-Wings and TIE Fighters. It's unclear if this will be a vehicle-only mode on this canyon map or if we're only seeing part of the picture.

Boba Fett hovers above the battlefield below, another special unlockable character. Note the jawa sandcrawler in the background. Could this be part of an escort mission or is it just set decoration?

This show shows an imperial hangar on the planet Sullust, located in the outer rim territories. This is the only map shown so far that is not taken directly from the films.

Just like the appearance of Jakku in the two Force Awakened trailers released so far proves that there is more than one sandy planet in the Star Wars universe, Sullust shows that Mustafar (the site of Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker's fateful duel) isn't the only place with lava. Hey, what's that in the distance...

Oh yes, the Millennium Falcon is in the game. We're curious as to whether certain vehicles are tied to specific maps or if iconic ships like the Falcon can show up anywhere.

That's all we've got for now. The new trailer has got us pumped up, and ready to get our hands on the game, hopefully by the time E3 rolls around. Read more on Star Wars: Battlefront in our online preview
