Which Cities Love 36 Of The Biggest Franchises The Most?

by Mike Futter on Nov 15, 2014 at 09:40 AM

With so many major releases arriving in the span of just a few short weeks, it's easy to lose track of what really matters: bragging rights. We decided to take a step back and look at the biggest franchises in gaming to find out which city loves them the most.

In order to collect our data, we visited the Facebook pages of 36 different series from 12 publishers. Using the platform's built-in analytic tools, we were able to request audience data for the franchises and came up with some surprising and fascinating results. There are some top 10 lists that don't feature a United States city. We've listed the first one to appear as a point of curiosity.

Each page is dedicated to a publisher, with two or three of their biggest series featured. For companies like Electronic Arts, Activision, and Take-Two, which have multiple significant branches, we've allotted separate pages. Be sure to click through to the end for some wrap-up analysis and our breakdown for ultimate bragging rights.

Note: Publishers are listed in alphabetical order. Data is limited to Facebook users that self-identify as a fan by "liking" pages.

Call of Duty is one of the largest franchises in the industry, with worldwide appeal and a competitive scene that draws players from all over. Its diverse fanbase is in line with everything we know about the series.

Skylanders surprised us with representatives from two of the wealthiest cities in the Middle East making the list. Dubai tops the chart with a whopping 10 percent of the Facebook fanbase, finally answering a question we've had since executive editor Andrew Reiner researched pricing on the rarest and most expensive Skylanders. Just who is buying these? Apparently fans in Dubai.

As much as we love Blizzard here in the United States, we weren't able to crack the top ten for three of the publisher's biggest franchises. The company has a huge following around the world, and tons of fans in Asia, especially when it comes to competitive Starcraft.

The fighting game community is big in the United States, but Street Fighter's world warriors put us to shame when it comes to expressing our adoration for the series. Also of note is London's fascination with playing dress-up while slaughtering countless zombies. Wot?

While the two BioWare franchises are most popular in English-speaking regions, there are some surprises. Kuala Lumpur is a surprise entry, topping even one of BioWare's studio locations.

Battlefield is a more diverse assortment, though four cities in the United States still make the list. Given the series' frequent focus on the American military, this isn't entirely surprising. But with a multiplayer component that has typically surpassed its solo campaign, the doors are open for a global audience.

In addition to zombies, London loves its car culture, and apparently, so does India. Seven of the ten spots on the Forza list belong to that country.

When we were putting this list together, Reiner suggested adding Gears of War to the rundown because of its strong following in Mexico.  We expected these results (though not by such a large margin), but having Mexico City at the top of the Halo list was an interesting twist.

Istanbul’s not Constantinople, but that’s probably because it got hit with a blue shell right before crossing the finish line.  With Mario Kart as one of Nintendo's strongest franchises, this gives us a glimpse into a fanbase we didn’t know existed.  13 percent of Mario Kart Facebook likes puts Istanbul at the top of the heap for devotion across all the franchises we examined.

I wouldn’t have guessed Cairo to be the nexus of fandom for Kingdom Hearts, but the capitol of Egypt has a strong lead, with 7 percent of the total Facebook “likes” coming from that city. Similarly, São Paulo dominates with the same percentage of total fans. The next cities on the lists are a distant second with only 4 percent.

Final Fantasy, on the other hand, is a neck-and-neck race for the top spot. Bangkok and Taipei both have approximately five percent of the fans, but the former edges its competitor out for the crown. We did note that the "likes" for Final Fantasy seemed exceedingly low in comparison to our expectation.

Canada loves its Borderlands, with eight of the top spots going to cities in that country. North America dominates the roster, but we suspect that 2K Australia’s work on Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel might start to shift that a bit.

As for Civilization, there is an expectedly diverse community of support, though I’m disappointed that we don’t see an American city until the 16th spot. Come on, America. Let’s start thinking strategically.

I knew that WWE had a worldwide presence, but again seeing Cairo climb to the top is baffling. Even more surprising is the dearth of representation from United States fans. Apparently, what The Rock is cooking is a smorgasbord of international cuisine.

With regard to NBA, Bulls, Knicks, Lakers, Nets, Rockets, and Hawks fans represent well. With the NBA pulling from around the world to fill its rosters, it’s not terribly surprising to see some international representation. It is a bit odd that Manila took the number two spot, though.

With studios around the world (and large numbers of them contributing to each game), it’s no surprise that Ubisoft has earned itself a global fanbase. The inclusion of Just Dance reflects a very different audience that includes Casablanca in the middle of the pack.

India loves Batman, holding three of the ten spots on the list above. Mexico City is again drastically outpacing other locales with 8 percent of the fanbase, compared to 3 percent for the second place city, São Paulo. The U.S. doesn’t make the top 10 for Mortal Kombat, but we can take consolation in the fact that developer NetherRealm’s home city of Chicago sits atop the stack at home.

The Wrapup

If there's one thing we've learned during this fun exercise, it's that gaming draws a diverse community from places you might not think of having huge fanbases. Eighty cities are represented across the 34 titles from 11 publishers, with some surprising insights about geographic preferences.

To tie it all together, we did some math and came up with aggregated lists. First up, the most represented cities across the franchises we selected:

1.  London, England - 27 franchises
2.  Mexico City, Mexico and São Paulo, Brazil (tie) - 26 franchises
4.  New York City, New York - 24 franchises
5.  Los Angeles, California - 23 franchises
6.  Chicago, Illinois - 22 franchises
7.  Bangkok, Thailand - 17 franchises
8.  Houston, Texas - 16 franchises
9.  Cairo, Egypt - 12 franchises
10. Rio de Janeiro, Brazil - 10 franchises
11. Bogotá, Colombia and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (tie) - 9 franchises
13. Istanbul, Turkey; Jakarta, Indonesia; and Paris, France (tie) - 8 franchises
16. Taipei, Taiwan - 7 franchises
17. New Delhi, India and Santiago, Chile (tie) - 6 franchises
19. Buenos Aires, Argentina; Manila, Philippines; Monterrey, Mexico; and Mumbai, India (tie) - 5 franchises
23. Atlanta, Georgia; Karachi, Pakistan; Quezon City, Philippines; and Singapore (tie) - 4 franchises

There are certainly some surprises on the roster, not the least of which that the United States doesn't even take the bronze in this group. It's also impressive that Atlanta beat out other American cities, including Boston, San Francisco, and Seattle.

We also calculated the number of likes for each title based on the rough estimates Facebook provides. This allowed us to aggregate total likes across titles and order them by biggest concentrations of gaming fans on Facebook.

As a reminder, our data is focused exclusively on Facebook, which certainly skews this fun exercise a bit. You'll notice that there isn't a single Japanese city in the list.

Last year, reports emerged that Facebook was losing its hold on the Japanese population, with significant drops in usership. We suspect that some of the lists, especially those belonging to Final Fantasy and Monster Hunter, would look quite a bit differently with a more substantial Japanese Facebook community. We also recognize that engagement with social networks varies from country to country, skewing the data.

A few additional interesting facts that we culled from the research follow:

  • Istanbul, Turkey enjoys its Mario Kart quite a lot with over 248,000 likes. The next biggest fan population only has about 76,000.
  • Call of Duty, with over 24 million total likes has a fairly distributed population. The top fan city, London, only carries about 4 percent of the likes. The second place city, Mexico City, is less than half a percent behind.
  • Skylanders is a huge hit in the United Arab Emirates. Skylanders of the rare element are stronger in that zone.
  • An American city is in the top 10 for 20 of the 34 franchises. The lowest place is Los Angeles at rank 35 for God of War. We expected our lowest place to be FIFA (where Los Angeles places 27th).
  • We're stunned that an American city didn't place in the top 10 for Grand Theft Auto. New York came in at number 12.
  • London, we need to talk about your fascination with the undead. Topping the charts for Dead Island and Dead Rising shows you love your rotting flesh. Both lists put London significantly ahead of the second place city.
  • Canada loves to shoot and loot. Taking eight of the top ten places on the Borderlands list is quite the feat.
  • Who knew that Forza Motorsport had such a huge following in India. By contrast Gran Turismo is a hit in the Middle East.
