This Week In Mobile - Abraham Lincoln's Clone, Rainbows, And Math

by Isaac Federspiel on Feb 24, 2014 at 12:00 PM

Lots of games this week involved strategy in one way or another. There's a turn-based strategy and math game, a game with moba-like gameplay, and one similar to chess.

Second Chance Heroes
Developer: Rocket City Studios
Platform: iOS
Price: $0.99

Playing as clones of historical figures in an isometric action game has a campy charm. In the world of Second Chance Heroes, Earth has become too weak to fend off an apocalypse led by evil robots, fast food, aliens, and zombies. Naturally, clones of Abraham Lincoln, Nikola Tesla, Napoleon Bonaparte, and others will defend us. It can also be enjoyed with two other friends in the co-op mode.

Platforms Unlimited
Developer: XperimentalZ Games
Platform: Android, iOS
Price: $0.99

Platforms Unlimited is an endless runner that is simple in appearance and design. That said, games like Flappy Bird have taught us that these can be the most addicting and enjoyable games on mobile. You play as a blue square with a rainbow tail like Nyan Cat and go through procedurally generated courses with a one-touch jump control scheme. A free version titled Platforms Limited: 12 is available on the Google Play store, and will soon be available on the App Store for those who want to try before they buy.

Calculords
Developer: Ninja Crime
Platform: iOS
Price: Free

Calculords is a trading card, turn-based strategy, and math game all in one. You play as a character named Star Nerd, and must defeat the evil Hate Bit, who has destroyed Earth. It plays out like this: Units cost a certain number of points to play. If you need to play a card that costs two points, but you’re out of the number two, then you can create it by subtracting a three and a one that you have. Units play in three lanes, and it’s important to both attack and defend against your opponent.

UHR-Warlords
Developer: Turbo Tape Games
Platform: iOS (iPad only)
Price: $6.99

UHR-Warlords is a turn-based strategy game with maps that heavily resemble a chessboard. Chess seems to be a heavy inspiration for UHR-Warlords, since units move and attack in certain ways depending on their class. At both ends of the board are strongholds, which represent a side's life force; destroy the strongholds and you win. You can play in a single-player campaign, custom games, local multiplayer, and multiplayer through Game Center.

Bug Heroes 2
Developer: Foursaken Media
Platform: iOS
Price: $0.99

Bug Heroes 2 is a third-person game with MOBA-like gameplay. Players can choose from 25 different champions, including crazy critters like a bumblebee boxer or grenade-launching worm, and battle in 2v2 combat. The premise is while you’re away from the house, various insects duke it out in your kitchen, yard, and floor. Bug Heroes 2 includes both a single-player campaign and a competitive multiplayer mode. One quick warning, though: a presumably fake version of the game is on the Google Play store, which has the wrong developer listed. Some user reviews have said that the app doesn’t work, and it tries to download an ad.
