Dream Video Game/Movie Match-Ups
The video game industry doesn't have a great history with film licensing. Let's try to change all that. Here's a few dream teams – film vets who we think would make a solid match up with well known video game properties.
Red Dead Redemption & The Coen Brothers (True Grit, No Country For Old Men)
The Coen Brothers have a rich film history making gritty westerns and dark comedies. They also have a keen eye for time period pieces and memorable characters. Sounds like the perfect fit for Rockstar's premiere western.
Left 4 Dead & Quentin Tarantino (Django, Inglorious Bastards)
Left 4 Dead's cast humorous quips back and forth amidst the oppressive atmosphere of a zombie apocalypse. Quentin Tarantino perfectly injects compelling dialogue into tense dramatic moments. We can think of no one better to tackle Valve multiplayer masterpiece.
The Legend of Zelda & Studio Ghibli (Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away)
We adored Skyward Swords art style and think that Japan's hit-house Studio Ghibli would do Nintendo's flagship action series proud. Hayao Miyazaki's animation studio has created a none stop rush of fantasy themed pictures and already helped Level 5 with Ni no Kuni, so maybe this isn't totally far-fetched.
Portal & Charlie Kaufman (Adaptation, Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind)
Charlie Kaufman has a strange mind, but it would take a strange mind to recapture the magic of Portal on the big screen. Kaufman's bizarrely humorous scripts often feature self-doubting, frustrated characters meaning he could easily put words in Wheatley's mouth.
Dead Space & Alfonso Cuarón (Children of Men, Gravity)
Alfonso Cuarón already made space a terrifying place to be and he didn't use Necromorphs to do it. His other work tells us that he can also create a diseased environment and interesting characters while using minimal dialogue – hallmarks of EA's horror franchise.
Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon & Jason Eisener (Hobo With A Shotgun, Treevenge)
We already know Blood Dragon creator Dean Evans worked with the Hobo with a Shotgun director Jason Eisener on this love letter to '80s action and sci-fi. The game even includes a nod to Hobo with a Shotgun's diabolical mercenaries, The Plague. Eisener's keen eye for what made the '80s magical, his sense of humor, and existing connections with the game make him a shoe-in for Rex Colt's big screen debut.
Devil May Cry & Darren Aronofsky (The Wrestler, Black Swan)
Aronofsky creates films with tormented protagonist who experience the world through a difference lens – that's practically Dante's bio. We happily embraced Ninja Theory reimaging of Capcom's hyperactive action series. That's the version of the character we want Aronofsky to adapt.
The chances of any of these mash-ups actually happening is about .001%, but it's still fun to dream. Which famous directors would you team up with a game property and why?
