A few months ago we asked readers what video game villain they would like to play as. We received a wide range of enthusiastic responses, making us question the morality of our readership. Here are some of the responses.

The King Koopa:

  • I would be Bowser from the Super Mario Bros. series. Apart from being Mario's main antagonist, he’s an amazing tennis player, golfer, and kart racer. He obviously has the security figured out in princess Peach's castle. Sam Fisher and Snake could learn a thing or two from him.

    Michael Garner
  • If I could play as any video game villain, it would definitely be Bowser from Mario. It would offer a whole different way to play a Mario game, and it would be totally awesome spitting flames as you rage throughout the Mushroom Kingdom to capture Princess Peach.

    Angelica Bernard
  • After considering the Illusive Man, I decided Bowser would be my best choice because I have been murdering him to death since he was born and he always comes back stronger and more agitated than before. Not to mention the fact that he can throw multiple axes at once and he spits fire. The Illusive Man just can't hang with that.

More 8-Bit Enemies:

  • If I could be any game villain, I would be Ganondorf. That's because I would be the holder of the Triforce of Power, I would be able to turn in Ganon, I would be a final boss, and I would get the Master Sword plunged into my forehead. By whom? Link, of course. Who wouldn't want to have the Master Sword stuck in their forehead after an epic final battle with Link?

    Christiana Mensah
  • If I could play as any villain, I would be Doctor Robotnik. Why? Dat 'stache.

    Devin McIntyre
  • I'd be Mike Tyson from Punch Out!! Then I would mercilessly crush the dreams of young gamers with just a couple of punches to the face. I hate you, Mike Tyson!

    Carlos Carmona
  • I decided that I would play as Dracula from the classic Castlevania games. He has all of these minions at his control; a great concept would be trying to defeat the Belmont clan as they try to get to your stronghold.

    Joshua Furlong

Metroid Meanies:

  • I would love to play a strategy type game as Mother Brain. The objective: Stop the insidious Samus Aran as she attempts to systematically undermine your plans for galactic domination. The gameplay: place clusters of enemies around strategic pick-ups as a means of defeating the intrepid bounty hunter. The final stage would be you as Mother Brain defending yourself from attack utilizing your various turrets, beams, etc.

  • If I could be a video game villain, I would pick Ridley from the Metroid series. Why? Well, not only does he breath plasma, fly, is part robot (at times) and keeps coming back from the dead, but he's a freaking pterodactyl. From space.  What more do you need than that?

The Monsters of Mass Effect:

  • If I could be any video game villain, it would have to be the Illusive Man from the Mass Effect series. Why? A vast amount of wealth and information will be at my fingertips to use as I see fit. A powerful tool to accomplish and do whatever I may desire. Plus, no one will know who I truly am. A menacing shadow pulling all the strings. Truly diabolical. Mwahahahaha!

    Felix Hernandez
  • I would be a Reaper. Imagine a game like Rampage as a Reaper? Destroying planets Galactus-style. That would be awesome!

    Jonathan Petermann
  • I would play as Harbinger; being the daddy Reaper just sounds completely badass.

    Roland Hentz

Dastardly Dragons:

  • If I could play as any video game villain, I would choose Alduin The World Eater from the Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. Honestly, it would be amazing to play as a dragon, and in the game, Alduin is the strongest of all the dragons in Skyrim. I can accept the fact that the dragonborn would eventually kill me. I would just be happy terrorizing the villagers like Trogdor.

    Jessica Welter
  • I would play as one of the dragons from Skyrim. Burning Villagers, scaring guards, and the only thing to worry about is that damn Dovahkiin killing all my dragon friends.

    Talbot Bluechel

A Chance To Beat Batman:

  • I would be the Joker in Arkham Asylum. You really can’t go wrong with torturing your nemesis and being responsible for countless deaths, while knowing that if you get caught, you’ll just end up where you started in the first place.

    Alber Blashak
  • I would love to play as Harley Quinn. She's sexy and awesome at gymnastics. Who wouldn't want to be like that?

    Bianca Alui

Final Fantasy Foes:

  • I would be Kefka Palazzo from Final Fantasy VI, because he had the best theme song of any villain that I remember. Kefka also embodies what I love in a great villain. There was no tragic past, no whining over some injustice done to him or his family, just a failed experiment that helps turn him into a complete nihilist. He embraces chaos and flips the world upside-down to become a god. It's utterly terrifying and yet so deliciously evil. Fantastic.

    Adrienne Curry
  • As a game villain, I would definitely choose Sephiroth from Final Fantasy 7. His abilities and wayward ambition for more power definitely put the scare into everyone he comes across, and in the end, as a kid and an adult, don't we all just want that kind of power?

    Rony Calderon
  • Sephiroth, obviously.

    Ryan Kosman

Portal Possibilities:

  • I would be Wheatley from Portal 2, because he already reminds me of myself. At first impression, I'm funny and likable. But get to know me, and I'm just a power hungry A-hole.

    Dan Duquette
  • I would love to play as GLaDOS. Every button could be another sarcastic, witty, funny comment, and you could control everything in the room.

    Ryan Siegel

Everybody Else:

  • I would like to play as Lex Luthor.  Seriously, can you imagine a game where you plan crimes and manage multi-million dollar corporate decisions, all while slowly working on a plan to destroy Superman? That would be way cool.

    Robert Perry
  • Pyramid head from Silent Hill. I don't think there even needs to be a reason to back this up.

    Judi Corvinelli
  • I would play as The Slender Man. The game from his perspective would be too interesting to pass up.

    Tyrone Smith
  • I think I’d like to play as Frank Fontaine from BioShock. I’d want to play during its prominence and eventual downfall, and get a chance to take on Ryan. Now, would you kindly publish this answer?

    Kyle Drapeau
  • If I played as any villain from any game, it would have to be Skorge from the Gears of War series. I mean come on, dual chainsaw blade? Badass!
