Moments: Betrayal At New Gettysburg

by Josh Straub on Jul 26, 2012 at 06:00 AM

The StarCraft series is one of the most prominent in the real-time strategy genre, beloved both for its meticulously balanced gameplay and engaging lore. While the story is filled with impressive moments, few can match the impact of what happens to Kerrigan on Tarsonis.

Warning: Spoilers Ahead!

Throughout StarCraft: Brood War and StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty, the twisted creature that was once Kerrigan is built up as the maniacal force behind the terrifying Zerg swarm. However, this character would not be nearly as memorable if she had not begun as a ghost bent on stopping the Zerg.

Players originally meet Kerrigan after Jim Raynor joins up with the Sons of Korhal, a group of freedom fighters seeking to overthrow the oppressive regime of the Terran Confederacy. The Sons of Korhal are led by Arcturus Mengsk, who insists that he is only fighting for freedom in the Koprulu Sector in the early parts of StarCraft. However, Mengsk's ambition eventually drives him to do the unspeakable: Using stolen psi-emitter technology, he unleashes the Zerg on the Confederacy. As the capital planet of Tarsonis falls, both Raynor and Kerrigan object. Undeterred, Mengsk orders Kerrigan to protect the Zerg hive on Tarsonis from the Protoss task force sent to destroy it. After the Terran Confederacy is defeated, the opportunistic backstabber abandons Kerrigan and her forces, leaving them to be overrun by the Zerg swarm.

This pivotal moment gives players something personal to fight for. In Wings of Liberty this scene has been redone, not only as a plot device to explain the story to new players, but also to remind StarCraft veterans what it is they are fighting for.
