Batman: Arkham City Rogue Gallery

by Ben Reeves on Aug 04, 2011 at 12:00 PM

Batman has one of the most iconic rogues galleries in all of comics; it’s almost impossible to include all of his greatest foes in one game. Developer Rocksteady has assembled an impressive cast for their Batman sequel, but we can dream up a few villains who we think would make the cast even better. We rounded up the list of confirmed villains for Batman: Arkham City, and then added a few villains we’d also like to see the Caped Crusaded tackle.

Anarky (Unconfirmed)
Lonnie Machin is a socially conscious and abnormally intelligent young man who comes to believe that the political system is broken and that most wars are the result of organized social systems. As Anarky, Machin tries to bring down the system, seeking to destroy politicians and corporate leaders. Anarky probably won’t make it into the game, but we think he would be a great addition because he fits into the game's political motif, and he would love seeing Gotham collapse.

Black Mask (Unconfirmed)
Roman Sionis is a former business executive turned mob boss who hates Bruce Wayne. Sionis has an obsession with masks and carved a black mask out of a piece of his father's coffin, but in a battle with the Dark Knight, Sionis’ mask was burned into his skin. We already know that Sionis’ presence will be felt in Arkham City – Sionis Industries is a location in the game – but Rocksteady hasn’t confirmed whether Black Mask will physically make an appearance. We’d like to see this feared gang leader throw his hat into the ring.

Calendar Man (Confirmed)
Julian Gregory Day has long been obsessed with committing crimes that corresponded with holidays and other significant dates, giving him the pseudonym Calendar Man. Rocksteady says he’ll be in the game, but Calendar Man’s crimes are generally petty and often ridiculous, making the character a bit of a joke, so we’re interested to see how the developer handles this unique character.

Clayface (Unconfirmed)
Initially an actor in horror films, Basil Karlo’s arrogance drove him so insane that he killed the entire cast and crew of his final film. Karlo eventually injected himself with a substance that gave him that ability to change shape, mimic the powers of others, and turn others into protoplasm with just a touch. Clayface hasn’t been confirmed for the game, but we can anticipate a lot of cool plot twists and detective moments surrounding the character if he were included.

The Creeper (Unconfirmed)
Jack Ryder is an investigative reporter turned talk show host whose aggressive search for truth has gotten him into several controversies. Ryder’s obsessive personality leads him to adopt a second persona where he becomes a garish vigilante known as The Creeper. Technically, Jack Ryder has already been confirmed for the game. As an investigative reporter, Ryder gets incarcerated inside the revamped Arkham Asylum in an attempt to uncover the truth behind Dr. Hugo Strange’s mysterious actions. However, we have to wonder if the Creeper’s ugly mug will pop up at some point in the game as well.

Deadshot (Unconfirmed)
Floyd Lawton is a mercenary and one of the most lethal assassins in the DC Universe. He’s gone head-to-head with Batman, Green Arrow, and the members of the Teen Titans. Deadshot would be a bit of a wild card for Arkham City, but he’d be a nice change of pace from some of the rest of the insane/flamboyant cast.

Harley Quinn (Confirmed)
Arkham Asylum psychiatrist, Dr. Harleen Quinzel, lived a normal life until she was assigned to treat the Joker. Quinzel slowly became obsessed with the Joker. His warped mind eventually caused Quinzel to snap, and the young psychiatrist fell in love with the madman. Harley Quinn appeared in Arkham Asylum, but she’s received a makeover for the sequel.

Dr. Hugo Strange (Confirmed)
Hugo Strange is an insane psychologist and chemical genius with a deranged obsession with Batman. Strange not only knows Batman's secret identity, but desires to assume his identity. In Arkham City, Strange is placed in charged of the experimental project that turns parts of Arkham City into a housing district for the criminally insane. When hell breaks lose, it seems that Strange has teamed up with the Joker – but for what purpose?

Mr. Freeze (Confirmed)
Dr. Victor Fries was an accomplished scientist until his wife Nora was stricken with a fatal degenerative disease. Fries placed his wife in suspended animation while searching for a way to cure her, but a fateful lab accident turned Fries' body into a cold-blooded state that has to be kept below zero. We don’t know a lot about Mr. Freeze’s role in the game, but we’re looking forward to his inevitable throwdown with Batman.

Hush (Unconfirmed)
Thomas Elliot was a childhood friend of Bruce Wayne, but unbeknownst to Bruce, Tommy had sociopathic tendencies and tried to kill his own parents. Elliot resents Bruce, and has plotted a few elaborate revenge schemes against the Dark Knight as an adult. Hush is one of the more memorable villains to arise in recent years, and we’d like to see how he would interact with the rest of the game’s cast.

The Joker (Confirmed)
The Joker is easily Batman’s most iconic villain. The self-styled Clown Prince of Crime remains a mystery, but the insane super-villain remains a thorn in Batman’s side. At the beginning of the game it appears that the Joker is sick, recovering from the effects of the Titan serum he took at the end of Batman: Arkham Asylum.

Killer Croc (Unconfirmed)
Born with a rare mutation that made his skin green and scaly, Waylon Jones was raised in a broken home. As Jones grew in strength, his mental state deteriorated and he adopted a life of crime. Killer Croc was a part of the last Batman game, but Rocksteady hasn’t confirmed whether he’ll be in the sequel.

Onomatopoeia (Unconfirmed)
Created by filmmaker Kevin Smith, Onomatopoeia is a serial killer obsessed with non-powered vigilantes. Onomatopoeia doesn’t speak much, but he does imitate sounds verbally. For example, when he fires a gun, he will often say the word, “Bang!” We still don’t know much about this eccentric character, but we’d relish the opportunity to see more of him in a game.

The Penguin (Confirmed)
Oswald Cobblepot is one of Batman’s oldest foes. Cobblepot was teased growing up because of his birth deformities. An eccentric criminal mastermind, Cobblepot is best known for trick umbrellas and numerous illegal financial activities. The Penguin’s famous hangout, Iceberg Lounge, can be seen in some of the game’s early trailers. In Arkham City, The Penguin leads a gang of criminals, which he supplies with night vision goggles, radio equipment, and heavy weapons.

Poison Ivy (Confirmed)
After a science experiment went wrong, botanist Pamela Isley was transformed into a plant-human hybrid known as Poison Ivy. Ivy has the ability to communicate and even control plant matter. Her role in Arkham City isn’t entirely known, but she is friends with Catwoman, and the two could be in cahoots.

Ra's al Ghul (Unconfirmed)
Also know as the Demon's Head, Ra's al Ghul is a brilliant strategist and leader of a legion of ninja-like warriors. Ra's al Ghul has lived for centuries, thanks to the life-giving properties of the Lazarus Pits. With his daughter Talia in the game, it would make sense for Ra’s to show up, but the character hasn’t been confirmed yet. On the other hand, Ra's al Ghul’s ultimate goal is to save the Earth from ecological devastation by destroying most of its population, so we’re not sure he’ll fit into Arkham City’s existing storyline.

The Riddler (Confirmed)
The narcissist Edward Nigma is determined to become the most renowned villain in Gotham City. Nigma often concocts elaborate riddles surrounding his crimes. Like in Arkham Asylum, The Riddler has scattered a series of collectable clues around the streets of Arkham City, but this time it appears that there will be a face-to-face confrontation with Batman at some point in the game.

Solomon Grundy (Confirmed)
Born in the 19th century, Cyrus Gold was brutally murdered in the swampland surrounding Gotham. It is not entirely understood what happened next, but over the course of nearly 50 years, Gold’s body mutated with the swampy detritus until he became the undead monstrosity known as Solomon Grundy. In the game, Grundy appears to be under the Penguin’s thumb.

Talia al Ghul (Confirmed)
Talia is Ra's al Ghul daughter. She has traveled the world with her father, becoming a skilled fighter and an intelligent criminal mastermind. She has long been a romantic interest for Batman. We know that Talia will appear in the game, but will she prove to be enemy or ally?

Two-Face (Confirmed)
Harvey Dent was one of Gotham City's finest district attorneys – and one of Batman's strongest allies – until a mobster threw acid in his face, driving Dent mad and instilling the man with a twisted sense of justice. In Arkham City, Batman must rescue Catwoman from Two-Face before he publicly executes her.

Mr. Zsasz (Confirmed)
Victor Zsasz is an indiscriminate serial killer. For every life he takes, Zsasz makes a mark on his body, but the madman is saving a special spot for the Batman. Batman will have to solve a special side quest to find Victor Zsasz in Arkham City. Zsasz went down rather quickly in the last game, so we hope he offers up a bit more of a fight in the sequel.

That’s all we have. Who do you think we missed? Who would you include in the game if you were working on it?
