The Latest Major Update For The Master Chief Collection Rolls Out Today

Editor's note: We erroneously referred to this patch as the "last" update when we originally published this article when it should have been "latest". We have updated the story to address our error.

In November 2014, Microsoft released The Master Chief Collection, an anthology of Master Chief's Halo games with Halo 2 being newly remastered for the Xbox One X. The game launched to fan outcry for problems with matchmaking and other issues, which 343 has spent the last four years attempting to understand and fix. Today, Microsoft released the last latest major update to the game before it releases on Game Pass next month, theoretically fixing it once and for all.

The collection has updated all four included titles visually for 4K and HDR and load faster than ever before. Games can now be installed separate from each other and further subdivided by campaign and multiplayer, so you don't need to install what you don't expect to play.

Matchmaking has of course been overhauled, with visible pings, offline LAN options, matchmaking playlists, and more.

"MCC also now utilizes dedicated servers housed in Microsoft global datacenters for all Matchmaking game sessions to provide further stability, reliability, and consistency," a blog post on Halowaypoint says. "Within the game you’ll now see what your average ping time is to each of the data centers."

Microsoft has announced a new Halo game, titled Halo Infinite, but has not given many details beyond that.

I wonder how much in terms of resources MCC has eaten up in the last four years. Did it take development resources from Halo 5? From Halo Infinite? At least hopefully it's done.
