EA Not Against Battlefield V Crossplay, Suggests Cloud-Based Future Makes It A Given
In their Q1 earnings call today, Electronic Arts talked a little bit about their future plans and fielded questions from investors. One question specifically needled vice president of investor relations Chris Evdenden about Fortnite, specifically whether EA has been looking at Fortnite's success with crossplatform play for games like Battlefield V, which has its own Battle Royale mode.
It's an interesting question to ask EA, who has stayed fairly quiet on the subject of crossplay and Sony choosing to block it on an account level to ensure there is no carryover. Evenden, however, started off by saying that the inevitable march toward cloud-based gaming means committing to a platform will be a thing of the past. Electronic Arts became an evangelist of this platform-agnostic cloud philosophy at E3 earlier this year when they expanded to the idea of streaming games to your phone.
Evenden explained that EA is looking at current crossplay opportunities for their titles. "We're looking at key franchises in terms of how we can deliver cross-platform play in a similar way that Fortnite has, especially some of our titles that have a broad and diverse player base," he told investors. "The ability to bring PC to mobile or mobile to console can bring family and friends together, and we think that's an important part of our future development profile. Expect more from us on that front in the future."
