LeBron James Named NBA 2K19 Cover Athlete For 20th Anniversary Edition
The king is back. Four years after gracing the cover of NBA 2K14, 14-time all-star and NBA legend LeBron James is back on the box. This time around, he's taking his promotional talents to the NBA 2K19 20th Anniversary Edition cover.
“It’s humbling to be on the 20th anniversary cover of a game I’ve played and loved since I was a little kid,” James said in a prepared statement. “We were able to do something really unique for the cover that represents everything that drives me and inspires me – from my family to where I come from and words I live by. I’m honored my journey can be part of this special time in 2K history and I’m excited for fans to see it.”
Each phrase featured on the cover has special meaning to James, who hand-selected all the copy. Notice that 2K opted for a tight crop on LeBron's face instead of showing a full body or action shot. This is likely in reaction to the fact that last year's cover athlete, former Cavaliers star Kyrie Irving, forced a trade out of Cleveland to Boston after the NBA 2K18 cover art debuted. Visual Concepts eventually made a printable replacement cover with him wearing a Celtics jersey. At the conclusion of the NBA Finals, LeBron James could opt out of his contract with Cleveland, opening the door to a frenzied free agency period. Teams, fans, and players are already preparing pitches to get him to join their franchise should he decide to leave his hometown club for the second time.
The $99.99 20th Anniversary edition features a lot of pack-in bonuses. Fans who pick up this version receive 100,000 virtual currency, 50,000 MyTeam points, 20 MyTeam league packs (delivered one per week), a sapphire LeBron James MyTeam card, 10 MyTeam Heat Check Packs (delivered one per week), five LeBron themed murals for MyCourt, a LeBron MyCourt design, and the King's Collection – a Nike wardrobe that features 25 pairs of sneakers. If you pick up the physical version, you also receive a LeBron James NBA 2K19 post, NBA 2K sticker sheet, and a custom wristband featuring LeBron's chosen words.
NBA 2K19 20th Anniversary Edition releases on September 7 for PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Switch. The standard edition releases on September 11 for the same platforms. You can get your first taste of the game when NBA 2K19: The Prelude launches on August 31 for PS4 and Xbox One.
