Major League Gaming Closes 2013 With Huge Viewership Increases

by Mike Futter on Dec 13, 2013 at 03:31 AM

Major League Gaming has shared some statistics that show that eSports viewership continues to increase. MLG has shared that online video consumption has increased 262 percent over 2012. Since 2010, viewership is up 1,557 percent.

Over 54 million hours were watched, with viewers watching on average of 150 minutes each. This year, MLG added Dota 2 competitions, introduced online streaming platform MLG.tv, and piloted a weekly news show covering eSports topics.

Our Take
There is a lot of money tied up in eSports, and it’s paying off. The big mission for 2014 (not just for MLG, but for Valve, Riot and others) is penetrating a more casual audience. It’s still tough to get into eSports viewing, and the group that cracks that nut has the potential to make big money very quickly.
