Journey Loses Grammy, Composer Still Ecstatic

Last night Journey didn't win the award for Best Soundtrack For Visual Media, but composer Austin Wintory is still over the moon.

After congratulating Trent Reznor on the win via Twitter (Reznor and Atticus Ross won for their work on The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo), Wintory tweeted the following upbeat message to his fans: "Obviously I didn't work on #JourneyPS3 hoping to win a Grammy. The entire point was the game itself and that's gone beyond my wildest dreams."

Journey was the first video game to be nominated for best soundtrack at the Grammys. While the loss is disappointing, Wintory can take solace in the fact that Journey dominated this year's D.I.C.E. awards, winning eight awards including Outstanding Achievement in Original Music Composition.

Curiously enough, Wintory's next project is the Kickstarter-funded Leisure Suit Larry remake; Wintory is a self-proclaimed fan of the classic point-and-click adventure series.

  • I think he's very happy with those 8 DICE awards. In the video game industry, there isn't a Grammy's, or Oscars, or Tony's; there's no one unified award show that carries almost all of the weight.
  • Even if they didn't win, it still must be a huge honor to be considered. Really cool to see them get recognized.

  • Good to see that he's being a good sport about it :)

  • To be nominated for the Grammy's certainly is an honor indeed. Well done.
  • Alright I'll bite. What was so special about Journey? I got the game and beat it, but It didn't really leave much of an impression on me. I can't even remember like half of the game.
  • It's still a huge accomplishment for the industry.

  • It's a sad loss in my opinion. Wintory is my new favorite video game composer. I can't wait to hear what he comes up with for Leisure Suit Larry and The Banner Saga.

  • Poor Journey, but at least you were nominated.

  • Something GOOD almost won a Grammy!?!?
    Haha just kidding
  • They handled the loss very well.

  • Never played the game but listened to the OST and now I'm wondering how the hell Mass Effect 3 didn't get a nomination. Not a fan of the end of that game in the slightest but man that sound track is F'in amazing.
  • Journey ya still won in my heart

  • I really wanted it to win :_ not only because it was amazing and it deserved it but because it would have been a huge achivement for the whole industry. Still, it's good to see he's still happy (I guess I'd be too if I were in his situation ><)

  • I kinda still think it deserved the win, but all that aside, it is truly a great game and unique experience. Congratulations for the nomination!

  • It's ok - FUN just won it for some awful song.

  • Wow I didnt even know that Journey had gone up for a grammy well the music/composer whatever you want to say, that is incredible to say the least.

  • Awesome. I bought the soundtrack and it really is outstanding.
  • This game deserves all the love it gets.

  • That's good he is still happy! It was great that it was nominated!!

  • Still glad it was nominated, Journey has one of the best soundtrack ever!
