Fable: The Journey Nixes Guns And Swords

The Fable series has been in a relatively small group of RPGs, in that its world of Albion embraces traditional fantasy weapons such as swords and axes, along with muskets and other firearms. That will be changing in the upcoming Kinect game Fable: The Journey, which places an emphasis on the magical end of the spectrum.

Lionhead's Peter Molyneux explained the decision to remove guns and melee weapons in an interview with the UK publication Official Xbox Magazine. "We could have done melee weapons, but the one thing I hate about melee weapons, and guns as well, is that the human brain is encoded to expect recoil from those things," Molyneux says. He adds that the parity between player action and the on-screen effect was important to him, since it's what makes players feel powerful. He says that Lionhead found an end run around player expectations by putting magic attacks in the forefront. "The thing about magic is there's nothing encoded in your mind about how it should feel. So no guns, and no swords."

We checked out the game at E3, and had mixed feelings. Molyneux, never one to shy away from bold statements, says the game will look better at its Gamescom showing next week. We'll be there, and we'll let you know how it's shaping up then.
