Save System In RE: The Mercenaries Is Not Returning

by Joe Juba on Jul 05, 2011 at 01:13 PM

How save files work isn't usually a major issue in gaming, but Capcom found itself defending Resident Evil: The Mercenaries' unconventional way of saving data last week. Given the controversy surrounding the method, Capcom says that it is unlikely to use that approach again.

At issue is the fact that The Mercenaries doesn't allow you to erase your saved data and start over. This led many people to assume that Capcom was trying to wage war against used game sales by effectively making a game impossible to sell back to a retailer once it has been played.

Capcom denies any evil agenda, though senior VP Christian Svensson admits (in a video interview with Capcom Unity) that the company probably won't be using the system again. He says: "It's fair to say there was never quite the malicious intent the conspiracy theorists out there would have you believe. It's also fair to say in light of the controversy it's generated I don't think you're going to see something like this happening again."

With that settled, it's time to find something new to complain to people at Capcom about. Hey, remember how they're redesigning Dante?
