Dante’s New DmC Design Encouraged By Capcom

by Tim Turi on Oct 07, 2010 at 12:15 PM

Maybe you liked Dante’s new ‘tude and black locks. Maybe you hate the new demon-slayer. Whatever the case, you should know that Ninja Theory’s original plans for his reinvention were quite close to the original character. Capcom is the party responsible for having the developer push the envelope.

"The concepts for Dante went through a lot of different iterations," Ninja Theory's Nina Kristensen said in an interview with Develop. "They went all over the place. We went really far out with some. The first time we sent our initial concepts to Capcom Japan, they said 'no, no you need to push it way further.'

In a world where Infamous fans lost their minds over Cole’s new design, this brazen redesign is pretty remarkable. Capcom didn’t want Ninja Theory to cater to hardcore Devil May Cry fans, however.

"Because, obviously, Dante is a big character for Capcom, we stuck fairly close to the original design template. But Japan said we needed to go much further, go crazy with it, and so we did."

You should read Reiner’s blog about the character’s changes before you pass your judgement.
