Dig Deeper Into L.A. Noire Via Short Story Anthology

by Jeff Cork on May 03, 2011 at 05:00 AM

Books adapted from video games are nothing new, but Rockstar Games is taking a slightly different approach with its upcoming L.A. Noire tie-in. Rather than have a single author regurgitate or expand on the game's story, the studio has worked with Mulholland Books and eight respected authors to create a new anthology of short thrillers.

“L.A. Noire draws on a rich history of not just film, but also great crime literature for inspiration,” said Sam Houser, founder of Rockstar Games. “Using the game’s world as a springboard, we worked with the genre’s best writers to create stories that lived up to the finest traditions of crime fiction.”

Writers on the project, called L.A. Noire: The Collected Stories include Megan Abbott, Lawrence Block, Joe Lansdale, Joyce Carol Oates, Francine Prose, Jonathan Santlofer, Duane Swierczynski and Andrew Vachss. Their stories will explore familiar cases and characters from the game. It will be available for download from various eBook retailers on June 6.

You can read the first excerpt from the anthology, "The Girl," by Megan Abbott at Rockstar's site.
