Rage Novelization Coming This August

A mini publishing dynasty is popping around an unlikely game: id Software's upcoming shooter, Rage. In addition to a three-issue series from Dark Horse Comics, publisher Bethesda today announced that a novelization of the game will be released on August 30. The book, also titled Rage, is being written by Matt Costello and published by Del Rey Books. Costello is certainly familiar with the game's story, having helped write it.

Here's what Bethesda has to say about Rage: "When Lt. Nick Raine emerges from his Ark, he finds the human race has not been wiped out. And people, as resilient as they are, are scraping together a new world from the rubble of the old.  This was not what anyone in the Arks expected--a new society where might is right, mutants plague the Earth, and 'friend' is a term for the person who hasn't stabbed you in the back."

In addition to his work on both Rages, Costello has worked games including Just Cause 2, the 7th Guest, and Barbie's Riding Adventure. He's also had experience translating id's corridor-shooting gameplay to the page, writing two books (Worlds on Fire and Maelstrom) based on the studio's Doom 3.

One thing's for sure: If Rage doesn't have an interesting story, it's certainly not because that aspect of the title isn't getting any attention. Let's just hope that some of it's being saved for the game.
