Offline Interactions Will Affect Online Rivalries In Dark Souls

by Phil Kollar on Apr 27, 2011 at 08:15 AM

We've already heard that Dark Souls will be harder than developer From Software's previous notoriously difficult game, Demon's Souls. How will that be accomplished? One new piece of info suggests that you won't have full control over who's your enemy and who's your ally when you play online.

Silicon Era is reporting on a new "pact system" that Dark Souls will employ, whereby players will make alliances with different NPCs during offline play. Once you go online, who you've decided to side with will affect whether other players you encounter are friends or foes.

While it may sound like a strange system, part of what was so great about Demon's Souls was the online system that allowed random players to enter your game as a Black Phantom and attempt to kill you at any time. From Software has proven once that they can take an offbeat online structure and make it compelling, so I'm willing to give this new system a shot.

The Silicon Era write-up also mentions that healing items will be rare in the game, though you'll also be able to create them through a crafting system of some sort.
