The lights are on
Today's cancellation of Aliens: Colonial Marines on Wii U is the final chapter in the long and sad story of the game's development. At one point, Colonial Marines was a highly anticipated title, but fans' excitement and expectations hit rock bottom once they actually played it. This doesn't happen often in the industry, but occasionally we are unpleasantly surprised when the reality of a title falls far short of our high hopes. These are some of this generation's examples of this concept. They aren't all bad games; some of them just couldn't live up to the ridiculous hype surrounding them.
SporeWhen Will Wright first unveiled Spore, it looked like it had the potential to change video games forever. The idea of guiding an organism through all of the stages of evolution was compelling, but Maxis struggled with crafting gameplay around the heady concept. The end result didn't drastically alter the video game landscape, but at least it was still fun (which is more than can be said for SimCity).
Too HumanDeveloper Silicon Knights built a reputation with games like Eternal Darkness and Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes. That meant that gamers were excited when the studio unveiled its concept for a techno-Norse sci-fi trilogy. However, a full series wasn't in the cards; prolonged development and technical issues caused the project to go sour, and when the finished product hit shelves, gamers found it to be far less than what was promised.
HomefrontIn a market dominated by yearly Call of Duty releases, Homefront promised to offer a fresh, more human look at war. THQ was banking on this shooter's premise of a Korean-occupied USA resonating with its audience, but the by-the-numbers gameplay and lack of polish kept Homefront from hitting the mark. The poor performance of Homefront is one of many factors in THQ's downfall.

ninja gaiden 3...enough said!!!
i still loved bioshock 2.....i mean the whole "you're a big daddy but can be stopped by a single splicer" thing was stupid....but i still found it fun
I disagree with what they said about Bioshock 2. That game was awesome. The whole fact that it took place in an underwater city that had failed achieving utopia made up for any slight imperfections, no matter that the previous game was in the same place.
I enjoyed Homefront, and now that Crytek has the rights to it, I'm even more excited for a sequel. Dragon Age 2 was one of my worst mistakes when it comes to picking up a game at launch... that, and Operation: Raccoon City.
I might be the only one in this camp but I would include EVERYTHING that begins with Bioshock. 10s across the board and I just thinks its a standard shooter. I guess I'm not a real gamer then....
Bioshock 2 is the only one that actually managed to execute based on the hype. It was certainly better than the rest of the games on this list..
The darkness 2
I enjoyed both Bioshock 2 and Dragon Age 2, although neither were quite as good as their predecessors. Bioshock 2 had better gameplay than the first IMO. I also liked the Dragon Age 2 gameplay better than Origins, as well as the dialogue (several other good features as well).
I agree with their choices. What killed it for me in ME3 was the ending and when the alien lady (I forgot her name) review herself in a photo. Of course ea tried to fix the ending with a dlc but it's too bloody late. Yep a bit disappointed with ac3 but it's still a great game though.
Joe, I really think you dropped the ball on this one. AC3 and ME3 should not be on this list. This article is about disappointments and I don't think AC3 and ME3 are even close to falling into this category. Don't let a small group of crybabies spoil these games. The majority of gamers actually liked and enjoyed these games.
How about Star Wars The Force Unleashed 2? I loved part one and I was so pumped for part 2. Then it came out and I beat it like in 5 hours. I was so bummed. Also I think Halo 4 was a huge letdown (Im not trolling, Im a fan). First let me say I don't like the Halo multiplayer I just love the whole storyline and the universe so Im sure the multiplayer aspect of the game is great. What I thought really sucked was the story. I thought it was a confusing mess. I wanted something epic like the first Halo and instead got a story that was pretty much pointless and boring.
It's redundant but Madden 13, or every Madden since Sega Genesis days to be exact. Aliens CM & Homefront are spot on fails, glad i didn't buy either one. I smelled a rat.
Completely agree with the second page played all of those games and found Dragon Age 2 to be the most disappointing. Although Mass Effect 3 is the better than most of these i'm not a happy fan. Yes still after all the dlc.
