Why Mass Effect 3 Is Our Game Of The Year

Mass Effect 3 was at the forefront of our minds as we here in the Game Informer office debated the greatest games of the year. Putting the bookend on one of the most influential series of this generation, BioWare's third chapter was a massive achievement that earned our highest praise. With one of the most controversial endings of all time (which we talked about in an episode of Spoiled!), the game gave the gaming industry a lot to discuss.

We crowned Mass Effect 3 as Game Informer's Game of the Year for 2012. Watch the video discussion between Joe Juba, Bryan Vore, Kim Wallace, and Jeff Marchiafava to find out why.

WARNING: The video contains some spoilers for Mass Effect 3.

  • Mass Effect 3 enraged fans so much they sent the company cupcakes. That's anger.

And that's why I agree with you, because they spun a spitstorm into cupcakes.

Dragon's Dogma is my GOTY, though.
  • Dishonored is my GOTY.
  • And this is why Game Informer is losing my respect.

    Edit:
Everyone took my comment seriously but me, I was just kidding and I agree with the choice. Everybody just chill out. It's like nobody has ever heard the word sarcasm.
  • Hey, at least GI stuck by its initial score this year and gave it to their best-reviewed game of the year.
  • game was wesome so was the series, my goty
  • There were much more deserving games then Mass Effect 3.
  • I agree 100%. This game is amazing. The gameplay is great, as well as the story.

    Now, BRING IN THE TROLLS!

    EDIT: @ 3:15

Hangtime hits the nail on the head
  • HAH don't make me laugh. ME3 is far from being GOTY quality. Sloppy story telling and shallow character definition and progression don't begin to describe the problems that ME3 has.
  • Loved Mass Effect 3! It was amazing!
  • i really never felt like i was enjoying the ride in me3. The whole game i kept asking myself why shepard doesn't just go and get help, then get straight back to earth. I felt like i couldn't immerse myself in the world because the story made it seem as though time was running out. The whole game felt more like it could of been stripped down and attached as the endgame section of me2. I think 2 hit such a high note with me that 3 was never going to really top it though. Having said all of that I really enjoyed some of the combat elements they tweaked in 3.
  • This narrowly beat out AC3 for GOTY for me. If AC3 had a little more polish and a better, not so anticlimatic ending, i think it wouldve been a dead tie.
  • Mass Effect 3 is my favorite game of 2012 as well.

  • I'd have to disagree.

DayZ everyday, all day. It's simply a mod, but I know for a fact that simply because it is a PC game we won't see it on the GOTY for Gameinformer. Ever.

If you haven't played DayZ (and because it is a pure multiplayer game, many campaign friendly companies *cough cough* Gameinformer *cough cough* will throw it to the back seat), you should play it with friends and team up with people via DayZmod.com forums. It's really an amazing game and gives way to the most authentic situations in gaming ever.
  • NOTHING should win GoTY this year..such a weak year for video games -_-.

  • "I assume since we're all here talking about how much we love the game, that we're all ok with that..."
I love the game. I adore the series. I was attached to the characters, and in two instances I teared up big time in Mass Effect 3. The ending is still utter ***. There is NO redeeming qualities about that ending. They think that people wanted some huge ending that ties in each and every decision you made throughout all 3 games? They're wrong. What we wanted was an ending that didn't say "Oh you're at the climax of the game? Well lets completely remove you from any choices you made throughout the rest of the game."

And there is next to no one who thought Shepard wouldn't have to sacrifice him/herself; the complaints don't have anything to do with Shepard dying — something you "Game Journalists" would know if you'd actually read the discussions.
  • I bet Dan threatened to quit if The Walking Dead even came up for GotY discussion.
  • agree to disagree, gi

  • Minus the ending, I could agree that ME3 is worthy of being GOTY. Everything up to that point was amazing.

  • I'd put Mass Effect 3 in my top 10 blunders of the year rather than top 10 games. It's a pseudo-RPG with little to no actual RPG mechanics. The game has a sickening amount of commercialism involved with it, including putting in IGN staff members and using day-one DLC. The choices you've made in previous games have NO impact whatsoever, its ridiculous. If you want a REAL RPG, play Fallout New Vegas, Planescape Torment, and other classic Bioware/Black Isle CRPGS.
