Rush Job: Why Assassin's Creed III Sets A Bad Precedent For The Annualized Series

When we traveled to Ubisoft Montreal to see Assassin's Creed III for our cover story last February, the development team surprised us by saying the game was already in alpha stage. This means the game was feature-complete and fully playable a full nine months before release – not exactly a common occurrence in our industry, especially for an open-world game where the disparate feature sets often come together at the last minute. Given that one of the team's primary goals was quality, this aggressive schedule would seemingly provide them an unprecedented amount of time to debug. After playing the game for a handful of hours, it's clear Ubisoft Montreal's plan unraveled sometime between that visit and the launch of the game.

As Miller eloquently pointed out in his review of Assassin's Creed III, the game has a lot to offer. I've always enjoyed the historical settings, science fiction narrative, and satisfying hidden blade combat, and Assassin's Creed III builds on each of these pillars in meaningful ways. But even after downloading the major patch, the pervasive glitches and poor mission design have chipped away at these pillars to the point where they are starting to look unstable. 

As The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Red Dead Redemption, and Assassin's Creed III prove, glitches are common in ambitious, sprawling games. Though they occasionally shatter the players' sense of immersion, strong story and gameplay can overcome these hiccups. Sloppy mission design, on the other hand, is much harder to survive, and Assassin's Creed III is littered with missions that could have benefited from more play testing. 

On one mission early in the narrative, Samuel Adams said he was going to show me the underground passageways in Boston. I waited patiently for him to lead the way, but he never started moving. After restarting the mission and experiencing the same thing, I realized the game was telling me one thing and expecting me to do another. Despite Sam's claims to the contrary, I was supposed to find my own way to the marker on the map. 

In another instance, I was riding on horseback with a famous revolutionary throughout the countryside to rally the patriots without alerting the redcoats. When I saw some British soldiers crossing a bridge, I veered into the wilderness to find a spot to ford the river. After wading into the water, the horse wouldn't go any further, presumably because the water was too deep. When I tried to turn around and get back to dry ground, the horse wouldn't budge. I eventually gave up and jumped off the horse. The steed worked his way to dry land on his own, but my revolutionary partner just stood there waist deep in water, showing no interest in joining us. Again, I restarted the mission. This time I successfully avoided the awkward fording, but when we were racing from settlement to settlement he would tell me to go one way while pointing in the opposite direction, instruct me to get off my horse then yell at me for doing so, and offer no helpful clues as to which house I was supposed to approach.

These are just two of several examples that Game Informer editors have griped about the mornings after extended gameplay sessions. The questionable execution extends beyond mission design and into the basic gameplay and economic systems as well. From the confusing trade interface to a touchy interaction system that won't let me enter a building or start a mission if I'm too close or too far away from the objective point, rarely does an hour go by that doesn't have some sort of problem arise. Given more time, I feel like the talented team at Ubisoft Montreal would have fixed these issues. 

When I experience pervasive issues like this, it makes me greatly appreciate publishers who embrace delays for the sake of releasing refined games. Take-Two continually maddens financial analysts when it postpones high profile games like Grand Theft Auto IV, Red Dead Redemption, and BioShock, but the resulting games prove that giving the developers the time to get the games right pays off in the long run. Rather than rush Assassin's Creed III to retail for the holidays, Ubisoft should have recognized these problems and given the development team more time to work out the kinks. Most all of these issues would have been easily correctable with a bit more time, and it would have helped the team reach the quality goal it spoke of when we first met with them last February. 

Putting out two games in a row that some perceive to be a drop in quality isn't a good way to keep fans coming back to an annualized franchise. Assassin's Creed has so much going for it, and Ubisoft needs to take better care in protecting the reputation of a franchise it has worked so hard to build. Though a delay may have hurt in the short term, the long-term benefits of releasing a series of high-quality games should be the overruling factor. The record pre-order numbers proved that people had high expectations for the game. Those fans would still be waiting eagerly a month or two later.

  • Didn't they work on this game for 3 years though? And to be honest, with your review score and other sites reviews it seems that the game doesn't suffer horribly from the sloppy mission issue. It seems that there will always be a form of give and take in any massive open game world.

  • I agree that delays usually help a game and its issues, especially an open world game, but I think AC3 is excellent even with its issues
  • It's been good to me so far. I'm at sequence 6. Hopefully things will stay the same.

    Red Dead had some bugs but like all those games stated they're easily overlooked because of the ambition the developers had for this title. I don't think the game should be condemned because the developers where trying to hit a deadline. Glitches have been present throughout all the Creed games. But the awesome game play and story are ample reason to look past the minor hiccup.
  • I have had zero issues with the game, no bugs whatsoever, I don't understand why you guys are having problems but i do agree that the storyline and missions could be better, not as good as assassins creed 2 but the smoother free running and better combat is awesome.
  • They should have taken at least another six months to refine the game and story.
    The free running and exploration wasn't as fluid as it was in past titles. Horses were the weres I've ever experienced during this generation and I felt that the story nearly went nowhere with a very disappointing ending.The whole thing felt rushed and left me wanting more. This is just my opinion though cause everyone else seems to enjoy it.
  • I'm playing AC I so I can then get the Ezio Trilogy which has AC II, Brotherhood, and Revelations on PS3, and then get this one. Unfortunately, I had no idea that the first Assassin's Creed was a seriously frustrating game to play. I hope I can finish it real soon to start playing the other ones.
  • For how HUGE and powerful this game is, I RARELY encountered major and minor bugs alike--nothing I could get over. Ubisoft did a great job, in my opinion.
  • I ran into a few of the same bugs and glitches stated above including one where i dove into a rock in the river and found myself trapped inside the rock. Although these things happened it dosent take away from the game too much, its still a great game. but i felt there was so much more the story could have gone into with the free masons and all instead of just connor trying to save his people.

  • Good article. I was thinking the same and had those exact same bug in my session. Lol. Its a shame ubisoft had done this to a fantastic franchise. It may be the 2012 dead line that foce them to rush before 21 dec end of the world and the new director at montreal, since he have left, AC have started to go down. I think his name was desilet.

  • I got a glitch yesterday that had quartet of indestructible British soldiers following me wherever I went. They wouldn't fight for me, or against me, and they appeared in cutscenes standing in a perfect square formation around me. When I took to buildings they followed on the ground. Fast traveling away from New York got rid of them, until I came back and they respawned around me as hostiles.

    On the opening boat sequence there was a cutscene where the Captain's lips never moved once but his voice played. That has happened several other times. I've had sound dipping in and out, making audio see like it's just missing in places. I've had guards that pursue me viciously across all of New York, one that chased me for nearly fifteen minutes despite not having a line of site. Down in the caverns I'll often kill the lurkers only to have them immediately respawn and attack me. Lots of unmarked off limits areas with guards that alert if you're running on the other side of the street and set off giant chases that are sometimes nearly impossible to get away from due to enemy density. I've had partners on sneaking missions that insist on following directly behind tails, and tails who automatically notice me the second I step out from cover even though they're facing the other direction and not alerted. The Liberation mission markers have never failed to disappear off the map, leaving me to run around like a chicken with no head.

    In New York when trying to get the final Assassin recruit I had to perform one of the liberation tasks 4 times instead of 3 even though my list clearly said 3/3 complete. There's a guy on the lighthouse island in the Frontier who is sitting on a rock by the shore, when you come out of the water there he jumps in and drowns. In what I'll only call the "prison sequence" only half of Connor's hair spawned in. In a later scene none of his hair spawned in. In one of the sequences I went from snowy Boston, to snowy Frontier, to sunny New York. You can, for some reason, sprint off large cliffs in the Frontier without Connor even trying to stop but he can't step off a fence with any kind of consistency. I've had the Frontiersmen missions just end in the middle of playing them even though I clearly hadn't finished. Oh, and frame rate is terrible. It's like they just decided that fully optimizing the game's performance for current gen hardware wasn't worth their time.

    I really like the game, and the fact that the big open world is back, but there are a boatload of glitches.
  • AC3 Should have waited until the Next-Gen consoles.
  • Yeah, my main beef with AC3 is it's rather an uncohesive mess of ideas, going for a 'Jack of All Trades, Master of None' approach compared to previous games. Was it really necessary to fill the open world with THAT much extra stuff, or create a complex trading system centered around establishing a homestead from tertiary characters that do nothing for the main narrative?

    The game is certainly diverse in what it offers, but none of it is really GREAT, save for the naval missions which are my favorite. I just hate the whole unfocused collection of things the game presents to you, none of it really drives me to wanting to keep playing, as opposed to the perfect pacing I experienced with Brotherhood (still my favorite AC game).

    Overall, the game is ok, but mired by unfocused game design. I'm hoping we actually get a console game with Aveline from Liberations as I find her far more intriguing than Connor, who I just found annoying with his naivete and uninteresting personality. I would love to see a more naval focused game as Ubi really nailed that gameplay aspect.
  • AC3 must have been a phenomenal game considering the score Game Informer gave it, even with all the bugs... This is really not surprising from the big three publishers (EA, Activision, Ubisoft) as they are constantly trying to churn out their best franchises as quickly as they can (annually if possible).

    Even with these few hiccups in bugs and silly mistakes, it ultimately won't affect the success of the game. People will over-look them, even if they are annoying, and will continue to buy the next AC game every following year. When it comes down to a battle between what's best for investors and what's best for consumers though, investors generally win every time.

  • I think that these games can be excused for their glitches. I'm everything else about the game is superb, then who am I to complain? That doesn't mean delays aren't welcome from me. For example, Obsidian, a studio that releases buggy software consistently, delayed the South Park game. The extra two months should really help them iron out all the glitches. The problem with the industry today is that everyone wants to release in the holiday season, and without delays. Ubisoft is usually open to delays, so it is somewhat odd that they would allow this. But then again, I've had no problems with the game so far.

  • I haven't experienced any glitches or bugs yet. Hopefully I won't.
