Dante's Inferno Sequel In The Works?

by Phil Kollar on May 19, 2010 at 12:27 PM

Despite kind of middling reviews, Dante's Inferno has done well enough for EA that they seem to be working on a sequel already, if a recent job posting is any indication.

A job posting for developer Visceral Games on Gamasutra (via Superannuation) seeks an environment artist for "the sequel to a major new IP at the award-winning Visceral Games." The listing notes that EA's intent with the sequel is to "make the franchise the world-leader in the action/melee-combat genre."

Given the evidence, I have to assume the job listing is referencing a Dante's Inferno sequel. There aren't a lot of "major new IPs" at EA waiting on sequels, and Dante's Inferno is the only one I can think of with a focus on melee combat.

And of course there's also the fact that Visceral Games made the original and heavily hinted in GI interviews before the game's release (and in the game's ending) that they had ideas, if not full-out intentions, for a second game.

The sequel would presumably see Dante leave the depths of Hell for Purgatory, following in the footsteps of Purgatorio, the second part of Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy. Unlike those unlucky souls sentenced to eternal damnation, sometimes game developers do get a second chance to impress us. Here's hoping Visceral can pull it off this time around.

We've contacted EA for an official comment on this rumor and will report back if we hear anything.
