Could Xbox Live Get Its Own TV Channel?

by Phil Kollar on Apr 21, 2010 at 01:10 PM

In the last year or two, Microsoft has made it increasingly clear that they want the Xbox 360 to be a full multimedia machine, not just a game system. If new rumors are to be believed, the next step in this process could be offering a full television station as part of the Xbox Live package.

According to a report from Bloomberg (via Edge) Microsoft has received a pitch for an Xbox Live TV channel from ex-News Corp. president Peter Chernin. The channel would offer original programming as well as reruns of older shows.

This TV programming would only be available for Xbox Live subscribers, and Chernin suggested that Microsoft could raise the cost of Live subscription by $1 or $2 a month to help pay for the new service. Chernin is also supposedly the source of the earlier rumored proposal to get Conan O'Brien onto Xbox Live, though that is unlikely now given O'Brien's newly-announced show on TBS.

Microsoft reportedly has yet to respond to the proposal and denied Bloomberg's request for a comment. Would you be excited to see television programming on Xbox Live? How about if it meant that your subscription fee would go up?
