Fanfic Writers Take Note: Blizzard Writing Contest Begins

by Phil Kollar on Jul 05, 2010 at 07:05 PM

Do you enjoy spending time with the characters and worlds you've come to love from video games beyond the games themselves? For many people, this means taking up the art of fan fiction and penning a story about people and places that someone else created. As a popular creator of the lore that lots of fan fiction is based on, Blizzard wants to show their support of the hobby, so they're holding a contest and giving away a pretty awesome prize to the best writer.

This is the second year that Blizzard has held the Blizzard Global Writing Contest, and the rules are simple: Submit a story of 2,500 to 7,500 words that is set in the StarCraft, Warcraft, or Diablo universe (sorry, folks, no Lost Vikings fan fiction this year, which means I'm disqualified). Submit your piece by August 23, 2010, and you'll have a chance to take home the grand prize of a tour of Blizzard's headquarters and either a Diablo III statue or a replica of Frostmourne, the sword wielded by Warcraft villain Arthas. Holy crap, do those both look awesome.

In addition to the grand prize, seven runner-ups will be chosen and gifted an impressive Blizzard prize package: copies of the Warcraft Archive, Diablo Archive, StarCraft Archive, and Warcraft: War of the Ancients Archive -- four huge Blizzard novel collections -- all signed by Blizzard vice president Chris Metzen, the cover artists, and the writing team at Blizzard.

If you want to try your hand, head over to the link above to submit, or if you're more of a reader than a writer, check out last year's winner, "In the Shadow of the Sun." And next time you're thinking of making fun of fanfic writers, just remember: Your decision not to develop those skills just means you missed out on a trip to Blizzard!
