PlayStation Also Had Its Best Black Friday Ever

by Mike Futter on Dec 08, 2015 at 01:53 AM

Last week, Microsoft was crowing about its Black Friday performance. Now, Sony is sharing that it had its best Thanksgiving weekend in history.

Speaking with the Financial Times, Sony Computer Entertainment president and CEO Andrew House shared the details and how the the latest console is measuring up. “We’ve just seen the most successful Black Friday in the company’s history,” he said “We are now trying to benchmark against the success of the PlayStation 2 — or exceed it if possible.”

Using the PlayStation 2 as a benchmark sets a lofty goal for the company. The PS2 has sold over 150 million units since its launch in Japan in 2000. To date, more than 30.2 million PlayStation 4 consoles have been sold through to customers.

Our Take
It’s important to note that Microsoft and Sony are using two different metrics to discuss performance at this point. We won’t be seeing Xbox unit sales moving forward. The company will instead report on engagement, as it did after Black Friday.

As the front-runner, Sony is simply in a race against its history. There is real potential for the PlayStation 4 to beat the PS2, but Sony needs to get its first-party software problem under control. PSX showed a dearth of in-house developed games for PS4, and the focus seems split because of PlayStation VR.
