Sony Announces Lifetime PS4 Sales Have Reached 30.2 Million

by Mike Futter on Nov 25, 2015 at 12:54 AM

In late October, Sony announced via its quarterly earnings report that it had shipped 29.3 million PlayStation 4 consoles to retail (as of September 30). Today, the company shares that it has hit a milestone with 30.2 million units sold to customers.

This statistic pulls together sales through November 21 or 22, depending on region, making it accurate within a few days. Sony continues to truck on, despite a weak first-party holiday lineup.

While PlayStation 4 remains in the lead worldwide, Microsoft made a statement in October with Halo 5. The latest title in the $5 billion franchise motivated sales in October, giving Xbox One the edge over PS4 in October in the United States.

Our Take
This is a great opportunity to point out how narrow the margin is between hardware shipped and sold numbers. It took less than two months for Sony to meet the 29.3 million shipped number and exceed it by almost another million.

We often get questions about how close shipped and sold reports are. As you can see, for hardware, they are quite close because retailers don’t want to keep too much bulky product on hand that they can’t move quickly.
