Twisted Pixel Spins Off From Microsoft To Renew Independence

by Mike Futter on Sep 30, 2015 at 07:37 AM

Twisted Pixel, the developer behind The Maw, Splosion Man, and LocoCycle, is splitting off from Microsoft. The report doesn’t offer much details other than offering confirmation that the studio is renewing its independent status.

Speaking with IGN, executive producer Bill Muehl says this plan has been in the works for months. The studio’s last title was the Xbox One and Xbox 360 LocoCycle, which rated a 48 on Metacritic.

Microsoft told us that Twisted Pixel will retain its intellectual property following the split.

Our Take
There are a couple of ways this could have played out. Twisted Pixel’s leadership could have approached Microsoft asking for the ability to bid on itself and put up capital for its independence.

Alternatively, Microsoft could have been getting ready to shutter the studio. However it came about (spontaneously or contractually in 2011 when Twisted Pixel was purchased), the studio was given the opportunity to purchase itself. Regardless, of how it happened, this means the studio will continue making games, which is good news.
