Nintendo Drops DSi/XL Price Point September 12

by Meagan Marie on Aug 30, 2010 at 04:02 AM

Thinking of augmenting your handheld collection with a Nintendo DSi or DSi XL? We recommend holding off till September 12, as Nintendo just announced both portable gaming systems will receive a $20 price reduction next month.

Starting September 12, the new retail price for the DSi and DSi XL will be $149.99 and $169.99, respectively. Holding firm due to steady sales, the Nintendo DS Lite will remain at its $129.99 price point.

“We know shoppers want to get the maximum value out of every dollar they spend,” said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of sales & marketing. “Our new Nintendo DSi prices make it easier than ever for consumers to access the tremendous variety of games, applications, and social tools on the Nintendo DSi and Nintendo DSi XL systems.”

The price drop is most likely a strategy to move units before the release of the Nintendo 3DS sometime before March of next year (the exact release date is still a mystery.) To date, Nintendo has sold more than 42.3 million units in the Nintendo DS family in the U.S. alone. According to analysts, Nintendo expects to sell over five million 3DS handhelds by spring 2011.
