Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z

First Developer Diary Brings Together Three Studios

Tecmo Koei’s upcoming Ninja Gaiden spinoff, Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z, isn’t like Ryu Hayabusa’s adventures. The cel-shaded bloodiest coming to Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 stars a coarse ninja, some questionable humor, and a lot of undead sword fodder.

In this first developer diary, you’ll hear from Comcept’s Keiji Inafune, Team Ninja’s Yosuke Hayashi, and Spark Unlimited’s Cory Davis (lead designer on Spec Ops: The Line). The five minute video details how Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z blends eastern and western interpretation of ninjas.

Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z will be out out March 4 for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC. You can read our most recent preview here.

  • The new art direction makes it look more like an Arcade game. I like it.
  • I hope this game does well!
  • I bought Ninja Gaiden 3 for the Wii U yesterday. It was clearance priced at $9 at Target. I actually really hated Ninja Gaiden 2, so we'll see how this goes.
  • I like the look of it but I don't trust the team. I remember the arrogance when they made ninja gaiden 3, throwing away everything for a total let down.

  • Day 1 buy. I bet this will be 10x better than the horrible Ninja Gaiden 3 was.

  • looks cool... hope it works out

  • The lead designer of Spec Ops: The Line went to Spark Unlimited? DAMN. Good for them.

Yaiba - to me - just looks like a cartoony, dumb, cartoonishly violent, mildly offensive* brawler in the vein of Lollipop Chainsaw. But I love the Ninja Gaiden series, Mega Man, and Spec Ops The Line. So I'll give anything from Keiji Inafune, Yosuke Hayashi and other guy a shot. Might wait for the retail price to go down though - heck, I'm still sitting on the fence for Ninja Gaiden Razor's Edge to go down a bit before buying it for PS3.

    * - Offensive in that the jokes will probably be offensive to my brain. Dumb, lazy "humor" is fun for no one. Duke Nukem, Bulletstorm, I'm looking at you!

  • I love the art style. It looks like a mixture between The Wolf Among Us and Sly Cooper. I've never really been interested in Ninja Gaiden, so maybe this will interest me enough to get into it.

  • I think this looks really cool, after the terd that was NJ 3 I welcome a return to being soaked in blood and limbs.. Throw in zombies and I'm good to go!!

  • I like the look, I want to try it
