First Screen And Details On Elders Scrolls Online

One picture may be worth a thousand words, but even that isn’t enough to convey the breadth of ZeniMax’s new MMO.

Yesterday you got a glimpse of Game Informer’s June cover story, Elder Scrolls Online. Today, we give you an exclusive first look at what the game will look like in action.

What’s going on here?
In this image, you can see a couple player characters battling some Storm Atronachs. Storm Atronach are a species of daedra (divine creatures that come from magical dimensions) that are constructed from stone and held together by magic. The most powerful of all the atronachs, Storm Atronach are immune to normal weapons and shock attacks, are resistant to poisons, and can reflect spells back at their caster.

Is that all?
Behind the battle is a series of daedric ruins. These great towers were built long ago by an ancient race of people, but they’re not the only landmarks players will discover throughout their journey. As players travel through Skyrim, Morrowind, Cyrodiil, and the rest of Tamriel they will encounter various dwarven ruins, ancient nordic tombs, decayed dwemer buildings, and many other ancient locales, some of which players may have discovered in previous Elder Scrolls games.

I still want more!
We know you do, but that’s all for today. If you missed it, Elder Scrolls Online’s first teaser trailer released earlier today, and check back next week for more exclusive Elder Scrolls content.

  • Bethesda is going to ruin their name.

  • that looks awful. it looks like Oblivion on low settings. c'mon, at least put up a bullshot as your first screenshot.

  • please don't be click to target enemy ): gets too repetitive...
  • Everyone needs to read this right now! Hilarious analogy for what Zenimax are doing to the beloved TES franchise. Basically replace COD with TES and you get the idea. All credit goes to "Reymas" on the ESO forums: This just in everyone! In light of Zenimax's recent ESO news, ACTIVISION has jumped on the bandwagon: HYPOTHETICAL PRESS RELEASE EXCERPT: DOUBLE HELIX GAMES, makers of “Battleship: The Game” are currently developing a brand new MMO for Activision’s acclaimed, signature first-person shooter franchise: “Call Of Duty.” Built upon the WORLDFORGE engine, COD: ONLINE, will feature a new and exciting third-person view from which to control your soldier! Pair that with the same MMORPG mechanics so many veterans are used to, with hotkey, timer-based combat, cooldowns, but in the fast-paced, hardcore military environment of World War One and we can’t lose! The story of CODO will be a pre-pre-prequel to the Call of Duty single-player games, that sees many familiar faces on dead old French people from the first COD WW2 game, as actual main characters that you and thousands of others will control across the theaters of WW1. Why not the core FPS combat of previous COD games? Well because in an MMO that would be technically IMPOSSIBLE! (Don’t google “Planetside” please). From the Sommes to Gallipoli, you will march across decimated wastelands and war-torn landscapes to finally fire one round from your bolt-action rifle and be immediately cut down by incessant, AI driven machine-gun fire that will guarantee a historically accurate outcome to the war. Keep in mind though, the rock-paper-scissors of hotkey-based 3rd-person combat! If your opponent uses his “Mustard Gas” AOE DOT then you counter with your “Gas Mask” Interrupt and press the number 2 to fire your gun at him. Suck at aiming? Don’t worry, all you have to do is tab target your enemy and you will hit him in the face every time. Battles will be staggeringly huge, sometimes up to 100v100 in the same battlefield! Did we say battlefield? We meant Call-of-Duty. Also, we’ve decided to approach the art-style with a more cartoony feel to it. Considering the success of games like “Team Fortress 2” we’ve decided to basically copy that. It’ll be great, you’ll love it. You have to! It has “Call of Duty” written on it! You don’t want people to think you don’t LOVE Call-of-Duty do you? Think of how bullied you’d get in school, and that cute girl in class would never look your way again without a lifetime subscription to CODO! Since we also own Blizzard, we’ll also be able to do some cross-promotion with you WoW veterans, who will feel right at home in the trenches of WW1 since all the battlefields are basically re-skins of Arathi Basin. You can even earn some new unique gear in CODO that will give your WoW character some new looks like, a German WW1 helmet with that cool spike on the top! Imagine your level 85 Goblin wearing one of those! ***! Last thing, the shareholders at Activision have said that if this doesn’t blow away WoW’s lifetime sales in the first week and score at least 103 on Metacritic, they will close the book on all future COD projects, regardless of genre or developer. It’s only fair, since we’ve invested more money and manpower and time into this game than any other COD before. So if you want COD to continue, you will buy this game and subscribe to it. Forever. Love, your “bestest pal ever™,” -Robert “Bobby” Nicholson J. “I was in Moneyball with Brad Pitt” Kotick
  • It seems to be awful. it seems to be like Oblivion on lower settings. c'mon, no less than put up a bullshot as your first screenshot.

  • OMG, i hope it will come out soon!!!

  • This is why I've never been keen on MMOs. Comparing Skyrim's visuals to this is painful =/

  • I'm telling you right now, it's sad enough just looking at this graphics engine, but I can probably get over that. The real scare is gameplay I swear on the nine that if this games gameplay is different from oblivion and skyrim... I will not touch it. If its not even twitch based... I will not touch it.
  • I hate how there seems to be a rule against good looking MMOs.

Still, as much as I adore the Elder Scrolls series, and as little as I regret the hundreds of hours I've spent on their games... the only way I will go for this is if it pulls a Guild Wars and requires no monthly fee. If it does, I'll just buy Skyrim again for the PC and enjoy the millions of mods that are created by the community. All in all, the mods will probably provide more content than the MMO. Just as a lonely experience. But maybe there's a mod for that.

  • the graphics detear me just a bit

  • NOPE

  • These atronachs look more like Stone Golems to me (much like the ones from Dragon Age).

I really hope this game doesn't indicate the decline of the Elder Scrolls series.

  • wait have they announced when its coming out?

  • Guild Wars 2 can't even compare to The Elder Scrolls. Also, graphics aren't everything. SWTOR's graphics aren't really anything special, but it's an incredible game. So far, and this is still the very first screenshot we have see, it looks pretty good. I'll play it just because it's Elder Scrolls. Some said that Guild Wars 2 would be the WOW killer. Some said that SWTOR would be the WOW killer. Now this is coming out. If anything could kill WOW, it would be the Elder Scrolls.

  • Pc only...Oh well, not that much of a online person anyways.

  • I'm excited, and yet sad, about this game. I know it will be a great game, but I won't get to play. I don't have internet, or a PC that will be able to run this game. :(

  • I'm not sold on this at all yet. I need a lot of convincing.

  • No first person or real time combat? grr!!!! most of cyrodiil being a battle ground for a huge war has definetly peaked my intrest however. Make it free to play or a one time purchase like GW2 and im on board.

  • I'm not wasting my time on this

  • I don't know yet if I'm okay with this. I hope this is as good as the single player Elder Scrolls games. I really really want it to be. *fingers crossed*
