First Screen And Details On Elders Scrolls Online

One picture may be worth a thousand words, but even that isn’t enough to convey the breadth of ZeniMax’s new MMO.

Yesterday you got a glimpse of Game Informer’s June cover story, Elder Scrolls Online. Today, we give you an exclusive first look at what the game will look like in action.

What’s going on here?
In this image, you can see a couple player characters battling some Storm Atronachs. Storm Atronach are a species of daedra (divine creatures that come from magical dimensions) that are constructed from stone and held together by magic. The most powerful of all the atronachs, Storm Atronach are immune to normal weapons and shock attacks, are resistant to poisons, and can reflect spells back at their caster.

Is that all?
Behind the battle is a series of daedric ruins. These great towers were built long ago by an ancient race of people, but they’re not the only landmarks players will discover throughout their journey. As players travel through Skyrim, Morrowind, Cyrodiil, and the rest of Tamriel they will encounter various dwarven ruins, ancient nordic tombs, decayed dwemer buildings, and many other ancient locales, some of which players may have discovered in previous Elder Scrolls games.

I still want more!
We know you do, but that’s all for today. If you missed it, Elder Scrolls Online’s first teaser trailer released earlier today, and check back next week for more exclusive Elder Scrolls content.

  • That doesn't look very Elder Scrolls to me. Also, no first person? This is just "generic MMO No.3,248" masquerading as an Elder Scrolls game, isn't it?

  • I can only imagine the bugs come time for launch...

  • just another mmo...

  • Ohhh sh*t that picture looks disgusting. Looks like it'll be rated Teen.
  • If Star Wars couldn't pull off an WoW-killer, than there is no way in hell TES can. Especially since an MMO world will lack the life and depth of the single player games, because, face it, no one is playing Morrowind for the amazing combat.
  • I was thinking about getting a second nvidia GTX 560 ti, or the new gtx... 680? I don't think I'll need to upgrade looking at this screen. Just an impression.

  • Mixed feeling about this still looking forward to it....

  • Those screenshots does not remind me of tes.

I smell a big fail coming up

  • This is going to make the wait for this game agonizing.

  • I'm going to go ahead to say a couple things.

First off, if this is a WoW clone, this game will fail or eventually be turned F2P if it was initially a P2P.

Many MMO players want something new in MMOs. The surge of SWTOR is a testament to that but failed to innovate anything new and was essentially WoW but reskinned. Thus the game is dwindling and the only reason it hasn't crashed is because of the Star Wars franchise brand.

Take a look at two upcoming MMOs GW2 and Tera.

Tera has a very action oriented combat. Many people, including myself, liked the combat very much but were put off by the dull WoW quest-like system. However, the combat and the other innovation the game has (Like players politics) is enough for some people to give the game a try. It will probably do decently well onsidering it is a fresh IP with no franchise behind it unlike SWTOR, LOTRO, or DDO.

GW2 - I did not fall to the hype train, as I like to actually play the game hands on before making my judgement. The Questing is a nice breathe of fresh air although it's not the OMG ChANGE EVERYTHING hype that people went on about. It is very nice and fun, however, the "Questing" experience in GW2 lacks direction and your "fun" factor relies heavily on the type of Dynamic Events you experience. The PvP and combat of GW2 will most likely keep players in the game.

Edit: I also need to mention high level Dynamic Events in GW2 will keep players in game. After experiencing some "Meta-Events", my god....all MMO developers need to take heed. I want my PvE experience to be that epic.

What does this have to do with ESO? The MMO scene is slowly changing from the WoW formula in terms of everything. Questing, Combat, etc. Copying the WoW formula is taking a step backwards and merely repeating past mistakes.

SWTOR - WoW clone in everyway
Rift - Wow Clone with slight change in questing

ESO - WoW Clone (?) = Put MANY people off.

The WoW formula for combat and questing is old and stale. We have the technology to push the boundries further, do it. Blizzard has mastered the WoW formula, stop trying to copy them.

You can hate GW2 or Tera, but at least relish the fact that they are at least setting standards for combat and questing that are better than the old formula.
  • Time and time and time again whenever I buy a game that the rest of the gaming community seems to love, I end up absolutely hating it. I have played so many popular games I consider worthless garbage that I have lost count. I don't know why so many other people love buying garbage, but they do. Most of the games I love are ill-received by everyone else.

... Which is why I am absolutely ecstatic that everyone else here seems unimpressed with this news. I love Elder Scrolls and for years I have been wishing that they would make an MMO. Bethesda is one of the few game companies I still have respect for, and I have full confidence that they will make this work. Based on all this I suspect this will be one of the best games I will ever play in my life.

  • This will be the greatest thing that's happened in the history of history

  • I don't know...I'm a huge Elder Scrolls fan, but I just have zero interest in this. As long as they don't replace the single player games with...this...then I honestly don't care.

I honestly don't believe Bethesda would do that, so I don't really have any worries about an MMO that might or might not crash and burn replacing a GOY single player game.
  •   I can't stress enough how much I HATE the crappy cartoon skin that every single mmorpg gets thrown on, working on all computers does not mean sucking on all computers! give it a grungy feel skyrim touched at make it an original art style and I swear you'll have my money.

on another note the quests in the elder scrolls franchise have always rocked! I never get bored and they're always fresh and exciting. this game NEEDS to have this and i don't believe it will succeed if it doesn't.

Finally keep the combat like it's always been in the scrolls NO TIMED ATTACK BUTTON *** keep it real time and interactive.

this game needs to feel like the elder scrolls but from this screenshot all i can see is FAILURE

  • This looks so effing epic!! I want it! hopefully the subscription is reasonable

  • Eh, I think the series is great the way it is. But on the other hand I'm a huge mmorpg fan so yeah, checking this one out will be a no-brainer. I have no idea who this Zenimax is though nor if they have even made any good games ever. In the past I would've said that Bethesda cares too much about their games and would ensure Zenimax does a good job, but I don't think so anymore. I think Bethesda only cares about making the most money possible now, especially after seeing how Dawnguard is Xbox exclusive. TONS of people are desperately waiting for the first Skyrim expansion and the fact that they would do this is proving my opinion. I never would've thought I'd see the day that Bethesda would make that decision, and I really don't like it. Let's just hope I'm 100% wrong and this mmo turns out to be legendary.
  • Well, after READING the articles they have put out, I can say without a doubt, that this is beyond infuriating, it is INSULTING to me as a fan of the Elder Scrolls. They are removing everything that makes the series what it is, and are turning it into a generic MMO! DO IT RIGHT OR DON’T DO IT! (Turn based combat, class restriction, 2nd era)

  • Everyone whining about the style of combat in The Elder Scrolls Online and wanting hack and slash like Skyrim, I want you to think about something. Not very many people have super internet. Many people have some form of lag, even if it's just a little. If TES Online had combat like Skyrim/Oblivion, then it would come down to who has the better connection. Do you really want your combat to be decided by your internet speed? Probably not, so stop crying about it.
  • Too soon.

  • I'm really sorry to say that this art style is unacceptable for a TES game. Might as well be a Rift expansion.

    Also tab-target combat? seriously...
