Sonic Boom Has Roots In Jak & Daxter

Today, Sega revealed the third title in its three-deal exclusivity partnership with Nintendo. Sonic Boom will be coming to Wii U and 3DS, but the surprise is that two Western studios will be handling the development.

Today, we heard from Big Red Button co-founder Bob Rafei (who led the visual art development on Naughty Dog’s Jak & Daxter series) about the direction that the Wii U title will be taking. “It’s ‘wide linear,’” Rafei told us. He likened the gameplay to Ratchet & Clank’s playground planets, encapsulated but offering players freedom to explore.

“We have a critical path that we want to make sure every player can access,” he said. “There are secondary paths as well. In playing legacy Sonic games, you have a lot of tiered gameplay and the advanced gamers would reach those upper levels.”

Two characters will cooperatively play in most areas, but boss fights will use all four of the playable Sonic team: Sonic, Tails, Amy, and Knuckles. The game will also offer power-ups and exploration that will take advantage of each character’s abilities. Big Red Button is building the Wii U version of the game in CryEngine 3.

The portable version of Sonic Boom for 3DS will be developed by Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time studio, Sanzaru. No details were available yet about the portable iteration.

Sonic Boom is a new branch of Sonic Universe, and it will be paired with a CG cartoon with heavy humor overtones. Tomy will be leading toy development, and tie-ins will include plush, action figures, role play toys, remote controlled vehicles, and other novelties.

Sonic Boom is due out in 2014. For more, including a trailer, check out our additional coverage.

  • ...Does anyone else think that this new direction for Sonic is worse than the 2004-2013 period?
  • ...*spit take* HAHAHAHHAA! Okay, that's funny Mike. Now for real, what is SEGA actually planning because they can't be THAT stupid.

  • Nowhere else to go but up, I guess.
  • Use of CryEngine3 was the biggest surprise to me.
  • Knuckles can't keep skipping leg day.
  • It looks like mindless fun. Which isn't a bad thing.
  • And again... WTF is wrong with Knuckles?!
  • this just looks beyond the pale of stupid. why does knuckles look like popeye? who does sonic look like a pedo? seriously.??!!! the gameplay might be good with sonic team not having their grubby hands on this one, but those character designs make me wanna take take a 16-bit sh*t.
  • sooooooooo amy huh? peculiar name considering the other three
  • Knuckles, what did they do to you? Who hurt you? Where did they touch you? Oh you poor thing.
  • If it is going to have the single player co op play like Jak and Daxter, and the multiplayer co op play like Super Mario 3D World (Which I think it will) then I think it will be awesome. Imagine Sonic runs through some hoops with Tails close behind then he runs to the edge of a long chasm where Tails then picks him up and they both fly over the chasm together. Or Sonic could be helped up cliffs by Knuckles. In my opinion, there is a lot of neat possibilities in the direction that this game is going
  • I don't like art style of the game but I'd still try it at least

  • I hope a demo gets released cuz I actually wanna try it.

  • I see what you are doing Sega, Knuckles has been fired from being Sonic's rival and hired as a part of Sonic's team. I have to say it is a bold move to make, maybe what Sonic really needs. Oh by the way Sega, Knuckles is my favorite character from the Sonic series, so I hope this is a different universe.
  • Eyebrows, anybody? Hm? Eyebrows? Ok...
  • One thing's for sure. This is definitely going to be a video game.
  • I'm already looking forward to Tim's review.
  • I actually kinda like the art direction for this, it gives them a chance to do things differently, and to be fair... a lot of the old designs were kind of same-y for each character. Makes sense with all the hedgehogs and stuff but, I think Knuckles deserved some meat on those bones to make the "super strength" thing make sense. I'm open-minded as always for being a old Sonic Fan, go variety! As for the gameplay, I think it could work, especially if you play more than one character in the game, much like in Sonic Adventure or... the other games. Cough. I may not own a Wii U or 3DS but I'll continue to be cautiously optimistic.
  • I'm fine with te idea, I just hope the character models get polished up before release, because as of now, not so much. I am excited to see that Cryengine 3 is being used. If this game is running at 60FPS that would be great.
