New Ghost Sword Pokémon Revealed For X And Y

Nintendo has unveiled a brand new Pokémon for the upcoming X and Y, and its a little bit strange.

Honedge doesn't have eyes, ears, a mouth, or limbs, but he does have sharp edges and a sentient cloth. Here's Honedge's full description from Nintendo:

It is now known that Honedge comes into being when a departed spirit possesses a sword that once belonged to humans. It can use the blue cloth attached to its hilt as nimbly as an arm. Pokémon Trainers who carelessly take this blade in hand may find the blue cloth wrapping itself around them and draining their energy!

Honedge can learn the attack Swords Dance, a Normal-type move. Swords Dance is a frenetic dance that uplifts the fighting spirit and sharply raises the user’s Attack stat. The effect can be increased by using this move multiple times in succession, helping Trainers who deploy this move at the beginning of a battle to overwhelm one opponent after another!

There have been unnatural manufactured Pokémon in the past, but Honedge seems a little bit different. If possessed objects can be Pokémon now, does t that mean anything can be a Pokémon? Like a possessed toaster or shower curtain? We'll have to wait for the full release to find out more.

Pokémon X and Y is releasing worldwide on October 12. For more on Pokémon, check out our feature where we asked the director and producer some of the most important questions, like what does Rare Candy taste like, and what really happens inside of a Pokéball?

  • At least it's not ice cream.

  • well, it's not actually that bad. they have had more retarded possessed pokemon in the past. at least a sword is a usual item to be possessed. and steel and ghost is a kind of a good combo. takes no damage from fighting types. so thats pretty sweet. I also like the fact that it unsheathes itself in battle.

  • Hey wait, if a pokemon trainer died, would their pokeballs become possessed and become a ghost/electric type version of voltorb?

  • I kinda like it. Really no stranger than sentient magnets, or a mime Pokemon.

  • Mod
*sigh* I'm totally a victim of Nostalgia but even so....1st and 2nd generation Pokemon will always be the best 3rd wasn't too bad imo.

I mean this is just....bland, when did Pokemon become inanimate objects instead of living breathing creatures that ( for lack of a better word)naturally lived in the poke world. Next we'll have Toilets and Iphone pokemon at this rate...

Guess this gives a whole new meaning for Swords Dance....
  • Well, they have done far worse than a sword before, so it an ice cream cone, candle and bag of trash can be Pokemon, then I don't see why we can't have a sword.

Also we have seen Pokemon possess objects before, Rotom can take over several appliances already.

  • their designs have been getting worse and worse after the original 151 lol
  • Cool!

  • I love pokemon but come on this is stupid you think that they might be able to put a little more thought into this one.
  • Are you sure it doesn't have an eye? That blue orb on the cross-hilt definitely looks like it's an eye. The sheath even has a hole for it to peek through... Anyways, this looks more like a Dragon Quest monster than a pokemon.

  • Should have named it Hexcalibur.
  • I hope this pokemon is good cuz I would love to have a ghost sword in my lineup

  • So when are we getting the ghost gun pokemon?

  • I don;t know why so many people are complaining about this.  There have been pokemon with worse designs going as far back as Red and Blue.

  • And why isn't Chuck Norris a Pokemon yet?
  • meh. I've seen worse. It's got potential for some awesome evolutions.
  • It seem like they are trying something new from a series that running so long, but I have see more about this new pokemon game if I am interested in place.

  • i guess we will see how good it is when the game is out

  • How does this hint that pokemon can be anything? Technically, the Departed Spirit could be a pokemon. If a pokemon dies and maybe it was an unhappy pokemon beat around by a filthy trainer, and it finds it self in possession of a sword and manifests itself in the sword to become Honedge, it gets a second chance at being a happy pokemon. I find it a little poetic actually. Good job Nintendo.
  • Well they already have the Rotom family: a lawn mower, fan, microwave, washing machine, and fridge. I wonder what type it is (make it a ghost/steel type.) And also GI, basically anything can learn Swords Dance, from Keldeo to Scizor
