Capcom Details Lost Planet 3's Multiplayer

Capcom is letting NEVEC forces and the Snow Pirates go at it in Lost Planet 3's four multiplayer modes.

The game also features six maps where combatants on either side will have to battle each other as well as the hostile elements of the planet E.D.N. III (although by the looks of the trailer below, it's not so cold that you need a hat).

Today Capcom is talking about two particular modes: Scenario and Akrid Survival. The former mixes up offensive and defensive challenges for each team, while the latter has the two sides (of three players each) competing against each other independently to see who can beat back waves and waves of Akrid before the NEVEC and pirates face off in a PvP elimination round. Multiplayer also includes customizable loadouts, vital suits, and ziplines.

At the end of the trailer, you can also get some info on the game's pre-order bonuses, which include five multiplayer characters (including Hunk from Resident Evil), and two rig weapons.

Lost Planet 3 comes out on August 27 for PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360. Click here for our hands-on impressions of the game.

  • I just can't get interested in this. The first two were pretty fun, but I do not trust the developer, Spark Unlimited at all. They have put out some stinkers this generation
  • I'm definitely looking forward to this instillation in the franchise. I really would like it if they managed to reboot the narrative with this one, because I think Lost Planet has a lot of potential to be a genuinely interesting series, but can't achieve that until it stops taking cues from anime for storytelling and instead takes inspiration from things it more readily resembles, such as James Cameron films.
Actually, that hadn't occurred to me until now, but Lost Planet does have a James Cameron vibe to it. Neat stuff.
  • Lost Planet 3 will probably tank. I don't really see it succeeding. Capcom hasn't talked much about it.
  • Great. Another mediocre game with less than mediocre multiplayer shoehorned in. Just what these consoles needed.

  • I can't wait for this game, the first 2 were loads of fun. But the MP was nothing special.
  • I watched another interview on the multiplayer and one of the modes will be called "Scenarios." (Think Operations mode from Killzone 3)
In the match they showed off, it featured two teams (NEVEC vs Snow Pirates) trying to kill a giant AI akrid while trying to grab the thermal energy it dropped and return it to their base. I really like the idea of a versus mode with additional enemy AI thrown in against both sides. I think it could, if done correctly or with the right focus, make for something really interesting with a lot of dynamic things that could happen in a match. For example, leading the AI akrid towards the enemy base and letting it massacre them and then picking off the survivors.
I'll be keeping an eye on this game because I really want to see some stuff like that.
  • Man Im so behined, I still havent played Lost Planet 2. I keep meaing to pick it up but other games keep getting in the way.
  • Picking some of the worst developers out there to work on your established games? Big mistake.
  • This actually looks kinda fun. Just...not $60 fun.

  • This looks terrible. There are a lot of haters out there but Lost Planet 1's multi-player was loads of fun, probably some of the best times I've had this gen. This series showed so much promise from the very beginning, all of it now squandered. If Capcom wasn't going to produce the sequels the series deserved why did they even bother making them in the first place?

  • Spark Unlimited's projects have been horrible.  Legendary and Turning Point: Fall of Liberty, both poor games.  The Call of Duty Finest Hour title wasn't bad but it was not something to write home about.  It would be wise for everyone to avoid LP3 like the plague.

  • Sounds better than 2's at least.

  • Why do people even bother with multiplayer modes for shooter anyway? You're not going to pull the vast majority of gamers away from Call of Duty and Halo and Gears. Why bother? Just focus on making the single player campaign awesome. The Vital Suits are kinda a nice wrinkle (although I'm no fan of the first person view in LP3), but this doesn't even have the enormous monsters of LP2? Lame. Missed opportunity, Spark. At least that was unique; a Lost Planet that did that kinda Monster Huntery gameplay but with good controls MIGHT have a chance of carving out a niche. Just doing standard stuff on standard maps with standard loadouts and standard third person shooting? Meh.
  • This comes out three days before my birthday, it'll be great.

  • I thought Lost planet 3 was supposed to be pure single player, apparently not I guess.

  • Those player textures are horrible!
