Hotline Miami 2 Hands-On: New Skills Drenched In Same Blood

I came late to the Hotline Miami party. I missed it on PC, but snapped it up as soon is it arrived on PS3 and Vita. It was the perfect portable title. I'm excited that the sequel is coming to PlayStation 4, as my multitude of deaths during the demo evidence my ineptitude with mouse and keyboard.

As you may know from our E3 preview, Hotline Miami 2 is the final game in Dennaton's ultra-violent, neon-washed series. It finishes the story started in the first game, though we didn't get much narrative in our two-stage demo.

We did get to try some of the new skills, though. For my first level, I chose the bear mask that enables dual wielding. A press of the right mouse button sends the character into a John Woo-inspired firing arc with arms moving from front to side.

There's also a character that starts with a chainsaw. Another can execute enemies with a gun (similar to the melee executions). Characters can now roll under incoming fire, which doesn't break the game or lower the difficulty thanks to a need for precision.

I died quite a lot, but that was something that didn't bother me (nor did it with the first game). I love the puzzle-solving approach to the combat, and pulling off combos after so many trial and error deaths still feels great.

The title is shaping up well, and I'm excited to play the full version when it arrives sometime this fall. For more on Hotline Miami 2, check out a recent trailer.

  • The first game was so epic. I cannot wait for this!

  • Whoa, sounds like the combat will be a lot more in depth than the last game's. Hopefully that doesn't mess with the flow or anything. I'd still love it regardless, though!

  • I still haven't played the first one yet now I have to download this and enjoy this spectacular game. The next game will be nothing but a masterpiece.

  • If you have a Vita I highly recommend playing the first on there.
  • I love GIO and I definitely don't mean to sound condescending but you guys seriously need a good proofreader.
  • So many Vita games coming out this year. This, Borderlands 2, Minecraft, so many choices, so little money.

  • I played the first one on the Vita and couldn't get enough of it. I am looking forward to this game for sure.

  • I got to play it today and it was definitely my favorite thing there so far. The swans may be the weirdest character to play. One gun one melee and it takes a minute for your mind to process it.

  • Still no release date.

  • Loved the first one, especially after I switched card from mouse and keyboard to PS4 controller.

  • I wasn't expecting any new gameplay mechanics so the dodge roll is a welcome surprise. The first Hotline Miami is easily in my top 5 favorite indie games that I have played. Can't wait to get my murder on this fall.

  • Man, I really need to get the first one on my vita sometime, I've been hearing a lot of great things about it.

  • Dammit. I beat the first game without knowing there is an autolock till the very last boss. After that harrowing experience I was going to give this game a pass but if its continuing the trippy plot (which I thought needed more juxtaposition) then I guess I gotta suffer a little more. At least now I know I can autolock.

  • VICTORY

  • I have not been able to play another game since beating the first one. thank god a second one is coming.
