Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag

New Gameplay Video Shows Off High-Seas Action

Ubisoft has released an impressive new trailer for Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag that features fresh new gameplay footage.

The trailer introduces players to Edward Kenway, an assassin-trained pirate wreaking havoc on the Caribbean seas at the beginning of the 18th century. Some of the activities you'll engage in are depicted, from ship-to-ship battles to diving for treasure to getting eaten by sharks – though I guess that last one is more of a "terrible thing that can happen" than an "activity."

I wasn't initially sold on Black Flag's pirate theme (specifically, I'd rather have a great pirate game from Ubisoft without the Assassin's Creed trappings), but the video does a good job of selling both the naval action and the locations, which provide a greater visual variety than AC III did. Here's the trailer:

Ubisoft also announced Gamestop's Black Island Pack pre-order bonus for the game, which includes a variety of Captain Morgan-themed content, including a treasure-hunting quest on Black Island, the Black Ship vessel, and Captain Morgan's silver flintlock pistols.

Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag releases on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii U on October 29. For more on Black Flag's setting, check out our video interview with the developers. To learn about some real pirates, check out our feature, The True History of Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag.

Full Disclosure: Game Informer is owned by Gamestop.

  • well gameplay definitely looks... different

  • soo have they ditched the whole templars and fighting to save the world thing? Also GI your video player really doesn't like to play videos the whole way through for some reason.
  • I wander if I will be able to change the wind direction too?

    ;)

  • Alright, this trailer is starting to change my mind about the game. But I still think Ubisoft needs to slow it up on AC releases.

  • The animation work looks better than in 3.

  • Count me in.

  • AC 3 sucked despite my high hopes for it...I'm jaded. Hopefully this will pleasantly surprise me

  • Assassin's Creed is Ubisoft's Call of Duty. How are people not realizing that? AC has now been annualized, being released every year, and people buy this sh!t. If only Ubi$oft would get up off their lazy asses and get Rainbow Six: Patriots and Watch_Dogs finished and out, then they might gain a bit more credibility with me, but rarely have I seen Ubi$oft get a game out that hasn't been delayed or isn't A$$a$$in's Greed.
  • Awesome!

  • this preview looked like alpha ps4/xbox 720 gameplay, cause it looked better than AC3, but not as good as other games we've seen for next gen. I'm more than happy with a better look on ps4 but I wished it looked like deep down. I don't really care much anyways this game is about the story and history.

  • Think I'll skip this one.
  • They had me at Pirates. I could care less that this is an Assassins Creed game.

To me, it's a Pirate game with Assassins Creed stuff in it, no the other way around lol

  • Sold!!!

  • UbiSoft's Assassin's Creed series has took to the seas in III (the beginning) and IV. They are trying to add change to the location and while expanding on their storyline. Even-though the mini-games (brotherhood, revelations) were a little weak, I believe the games still holds its own.

  • I can't wait to see more of this!! :)

  • I was pretty much done with the Assassins Creed games after the disappointment which was Revelations, but AC3 changed my mind. I picked AC3 up simply because I wanted to know the ending of Desmond, nothing more. I figured since I had been following the story since part 1 I could endure AC3. Well I was blown away by AC3. I loved everything about it and I had a blast with the naval missions (which I had my doubts about in the beginning). So today I watch this trailer and its pretty much a trailer for a whole game made from what was possibly the best part of AC3.....Ubisoft take my money!!!!!
  • I am more convinced! Maybe they've been working on this since AC2 or Brotherhood came out.

  • I feel like everyone's turning on AC3 all the sudden, after giving it really good reviews. I'm like hello!!! We should've hated it from the beginning!!

  • They'd better do Blackbeard justice...

  • Looks like the combat is still made for babies.
