Why Pirates? Assassin's Creed IV's Developers Explain The New Setting

By now you've probably heard that the next installment of the Assassin's Creed series will put you in the role of Connor's grandfather as he builds up a pirate crew and sails the Caribbean sea, but why? With a universe that can take you to any point in history, what was so attractive about the pirate setting? While visiting Ubisoft Montreal we spoke to the game's director, writer, and art director to learn more about what excites them about creating the ultimate pirate fantasy wish-fulfillment.

Watch the video below to learn more about the game and see exclusive, new screenshots.

  • i wish they went with feudal Japan like some fan drew on Deviantart. man, that was some good assassin's creed type artwork...

edit: I ended up going on deviant art, and it turns out it was for the Chinese Empire. Yeah, this has nothing to do with what the developers are talking about, but it could have been a new setting.
  • i hope this shows them willing to go back in time, not just forward from conner. there are so many time periods they could do
  • Let me guess they liked the sailing.
  • I'm actually Interested in them perhaps attempting a First Civilation time period Assassins Creed game. Now That would be incredible.
  • i wish they would do a ninja era so you would have some competition as the Assassin.
  • I'm just thankful they haven't moved forward timeline wise... I don't know if I could ever see a "modern warfare" type of Assassin's Creed.
  • I wonder if this was set to be GI's April cover story but they had to release this stuff early due to the leaks. I wish there weren't so many leaks. But anyway, can't wait for Pirates Creed!
  • Awesome!! Put it on Wii U and I'll buy it in a heartbeat.
  • Asian would've been my move. I can't wait for the one that takes place in the year 3250 with flying cars!
  • They need to update that costume. I understand that that's supposed to be the uniform of the Assassin's, but even the Army changes their get-up once in a while. The white robe and hood made sense for an assassin in the first few games when there were tons of people walking around wearing the same thing, but in a Revolutionary America or Pirate setting, I feel like people would be aware of the guy wearing the robe and massive face hiding hood.
  • Because all the reviewers said "we wish there was an entire game of this naval sea thing".
  • ...because it's hip to dig on pirates?

  • is it strange that i am more interested in this game than i was in AC3? Maybe i just like pirates? (points at profile pic)*
  • After AC3 was particularly action-heavy and my personal distaste for the naval battles, I'm not really looking forward to AC4 at the moment. I'd really like a return to more sneaky assassinations as in the earlier games of the series, and maybe a ninja/samurai conflict in later games could scratch that itch.
  • I hope they are more careful with the story. I liked AC III's story, but I felt like it was a little rushed. Some more quiet moments between the major characters would have done a lot of good.
  • i'm still waiting on the stone age caveman assassin with dinosaurs, willy mammoths and sabretooth tigers.... oh my! :D

Everything Ubisoft has revealed for Black Flag sounds cool, but I still feel like it would be better as a new IP rather than shoehorning it into the Assassin's Creed franchise. Pirates are cool enough on their own!
  • The best and shortest answer they could have given is simple:

    Why not?

Pirates seem to be coming back as a trend nowadays. Not just Piracy, but rather as a whole new era and timezone. Still, like Jeff says, could have been a whole lot better if done as another IP rather than AC.

  • Not the time period I was hoping for, but okay. It looks intersting.
