Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag

New Gameplay Video Shows Off High-Seas Action

Ubisoft has released an impressive new trailer for Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag that features fresh new gameplay footage.

The trailer introduces players to Edward Kenway, an assassin-trained pirate wreaking havoc on the Caribbean seas at the beginning of the 18th century. Some of the activities you'll engage in are depicted, from ship-to-ship battles to diving for treasure to getting eaten by sharks – though I guess that last one is more of a "terrible thing that can happen" than an "activity."

I wasn't initially sold on Black Flag's pirate theme (specifically, I'd rather have a great pirate game from Ubisoft without the Assassin's Creed trappings), but the video does a good job of selling both the naval action and the locations, which provide a greater visual variety than AC III did. Here's the trailer:

Ubisoft also announced Gamestop's Black Island Pack pre-order bonus for the game, which includes a variety of Captain Morgan-themed content, including a treasure-hunting quest on Black Island, the Black Ship vessel, and Captain Morgan's silver flintlock pistols.

Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag releases on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii U on October 29. For more on Black Flag's setting, check out our video interview with the developers. To learn about some real pirates, check out our feature, The True History of Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag.

Full Disclosure: Game Informer is owned by Gamestop.

  • This game is only coming out for Xbox right?
  • Slooooooow dooooooooown, Ubisoft.
  • Captain Morgan-themed content? Everybody in the game is probably going to use the phrase "Drink up, brochacho."
  • I would've waited for next gen.
  • This will be the first main AC game I don't buy. Sequel fatigue.
  • Cool.  Can't wait to see more gameplay footage of this bad boy.

  • Still not sold on the setting and how a pirate is trained by assassins....but! i will say, i am sold on the underwater portions! It digs at my inner merman to swim around with sharks and fish.
  • I mean sure, a game a year is a bit much, but at least it's not three different Connor Games. If they're going to release a game a year, I'm glad it's something new rather than basically releasing the second game three times.
  • Looking forward to the naval battles, my favorite part of AC3. I just hope the cities here are more exciting than Boston and New York.

  • Underwater sections? Interesting. Also duel cutlasses? Woot woot!
  • its not coming to PC??????????
  • Still yet to have me sold. Maybe if they release one of two more trailers showing off the assassins portion of the game, not simply an Uncharted 1 type game...

  • Looks amazing! I'll still have to see more about how the protagonist and the story shapes up, but at least this is looking like on heck of a time! Love the deep-sea diving and the ship battles. It's like Assassin's Far Cry 3!

  • Was skeptical, now excited

  • 1:28

That narrator pronounces "adversaries" really weirdly.

  • This looks interesting especially the deep-sea diving and being able to punch a shark on the nose.

  • If this is like assassin's creed 3 then i will not be getting it. 3 was a step backward in my opinion. its combat was cooler and better looking but it wasn't as fun, indepth or satisfying as the ones before it. i felt connors story was lacking and the upgrading only by doing tedious missions very boring. i finally had fun playing as desmond and they just ruined it all right at the end of the game with that crapy ending. they did improved a lot of things but they also went back too many steps in other places. my love for this series was really shaken and i don't know if ill get it back.
  • The Black Chest Edition they showed looks sick! But also quite a lot more expensive, according to the Uplay store. Gonna save up for that.

I didn't enjoy AC3 as much but I have high hopes for Black Flag. Bring it on!

  • Am I the only one who's mostly disturbed by the fact that Edward becomes bald when the hood's on? =/ They could use it to promote the next-gen versions: "The epic adventure, NOW WITH HAIR!".
