Respec Radio Ep. 15: Your Final Fantasy XIV Questions Answered

We've done it again! This week's edition of Respec Radio, Game Informer's World of Warcraft and MMO podcast, is shorter than usual, but that doesn't mean there's not plenty of room for screaming, name-calling, and a teensy bit of insight. We kick things off with a very shouty discussion between Andy McNamara and Adam Biessener on whether or not Brewfest's free epic loot is dumb and why Andy is upset at losing nerd points. Then we rub the Cataclysm release date in his face and discuss the delay for DC Universe Online.

In our featured segment, I answer your questions about Final Fantasy XIV. Has the final release of the game surpassed my initial mostly negative impressions? Is it a good MMO for beginners in the genre? And what's the big deal about the menu lag? Tune in below to find out, or subscribe to the podcast via our RSS feed.

  • Aw, ***.  I was certain I was gonna win.  Oh well, congrats to Mike!  That was an awesome contest.

Man, FF XIV really doesn't sound appealing.  I'm not really an MMO gamer; I'm a fan of huge, story-driven games.  I don't like the fact that story missions have such huge gaps between them.

  • I have seen some heated debates on a variety of topics before, but this was intense! lol

  • This means Blizzard can go full on Diablo 3 mode please summer 2011 release!

  • Overall, a much better assessment on FFXIV Phil, and far less derogatory in nature.  I am running a blog that updates at least once per week that addresses my gripes, trials, and successes in the game.  I completely agree that an Auction House is inevitable and will arrive eventually.  As I stated in a previous comment to you, I just hope you realize how many people are going to take YOUR word as to the final product.  I can blog all I want, but my opinion is not held in the same regard as yours.  So far, though, you have given a pretty honest review and are having a decent enough time that you haven't at least given up and walked away.  I feel that the more time you invest in the game, the better the experience gets.  It is definitely one of the more ambitious MMO's ever created and THE most beautiful in terms of graphics by far.  The number of my gripes continues to dwindle as Square continues to address any and all issues.  I am not as concerned about the story being spaced out, because it makes for not running out of story quickly as many MMO's seem to be guilty of.  I don't forget what has happened storyline wise, and look forward to being able to continue on each time and know I have earned my way to the next major plot points.

  • My name is pronounced like a zombie would say it. (bbbbrainssss) Oh and thanks for answering my question.
  • I like the tunes and how crazy-passionately andy defends his positions, its sooo thexy

  • I don't understand how such basic problems like trying to sift through all the different vendors for certain items, or the menu lag (???) made it into the launch game. After how many months of beta?

Did the devs even playtest this game? Who is the lead designer, and why wasn't he addressing the fact that his immersion was being shattered constantly?

I'm tired of hearing these things over and over and over again from SquareEnix the past few years. Are these guys numbskulls or something? They are the biggest example of why people are saying Japan is falling behind in the game industry. Konami, Capcom -- they're fine. SE, it's almost like they don't even care or just want to bank on fanboys.

Eek, sorry about the rant, I was just really looking forward to this game but from what I've been hearing it doesn't even seem worth a trial (not with other great MMOs like Fallen Earth, WoW, and then Old Republic around the corner).
  • Phil, you should of spell-stole Andy's Bloodrage. L2 Mage!

Feats of Stupidity sounds like a pretty awesome idea. I could go from a Pinhead rank, to Half-wit, and finally Full-Blown Moron rank.

It's good to hear that I have a chance to actually participate in the beta for DCU. It's definitely a game I need to have my hands on first before I buy. Wish I could have done that for Champion's Online...

  • Hey Phil, you'll be in the DCU Beta too, right? Which platform will you be playing on?

  • I have to agree with you guys on the answer to my question about the economy. Given time I hope it gets better. Thanks for the input! First time listener actually. You guys are hilarious, yet informative.
I have to say that I 110% agree about the massively annoying menu lag too.
  • Thanks for answering my questions guys! Once my brother gets FFXIV, I think I will try it out a bit for the PS3.

  • Ha ha FF XIV, have fun playing a MMO that was dated back when it was FFXI.

  • Square needed to forget MMO and concentrate on not making the main series suck.

  • My dumb computer won't play stuff through headphones.  I plug them in but it still plays through the speakers.

So I have to walk all the way to the library so my "precious" roommate can sleep.

    Gah! College sucks.

  • Congrats to the winner.  I'm jealous.

I don't want to listen to something totally lame! Don't go Andy!

I've always dreamed of holding hands in the socialist utopia, this argument is awesome!

I want that special edition podcast!

I think Final Fantasy is better as a single player game.  I'll stick with finishing 10-13.  I stink at these games =(

That cap was a dumb idea.

Good podcast, I need to hone my question asking skillz.

Minecraft confuses me, please give me pointers!

  • Thanks for answering my question. Sad to hear the menu lag is still there. Hoping SE will fix it as soon as freakin' possible (among other things, of course), because it seems like a game with great potential.

  • When the podcast was nearing its end, I felt a disturbance. The quality of the podcast went from awesome to totally lame. Never leave us again Andy, it is too horrible for words.
  • My first respec radio, ill have to go back and check some of the others out. I enjoyed your comments on ffxiv, but its scary for me to think i may be wasting time and money on a title that i've been waiting for and anticipated highly for so long.

I keep chalking it up to the game being new and this and that. Honostly, i wouldnt mind if the game still hadnt been released and if the relase date had a big 2011 on it to work out some bugs.

Its sad to think that a less known company making the same mistakes would be regarded as unforgivable.

  • zomg, I'm the guy who wrote the journal entries for the contest he mentioned. I didn't win the contest, but I'm totally happy right now 'cause Phil mentioned my entry and thought it was funny. Wooooo! :)

  • ooooh purple.... drake, the first time i listened to this I thought phil said he was glad that he got his purple drank
