NPD: Pokémon And Monsters Drive Nintendo 3DS To Number 1 In July

by Daniel Tack on Aug 18, 2016 at 10:43 AM

According to Nintendo, the NPD report which will be sent out later today to the public will show 3DS leading hardware and software sales for the month of July. With strong sales from Monster Hunter Generations, the entire 3DS family was propelled to exceed last July's performance by 80 percent.

With Pokemon fever in the air, sales of the most recent new titles (not including remakes),  X and Y, were up 200 percent during the month. That does not include used title sales.

Monster Hunter Generations landed on the top of the sales list for July. Nintendo says that five of the top eleven games are playable on its systems.

You may have seen our report last week regarding the Xbox One being the best-selling console in July. This is still accurate, as consoles and handhelds are in different categories.

Our Take
While I had assumed that Pokémon Go fever would have a significant impact on mainline Pokémon titles, I wasn't prepared for this kind of surge. It's impressive, and means that Pokémon Sun and Moon will be poised for a whole new crop of Pokémon lovers when it launches later this year. It's also great to see a title aimed at core gamers sitting atop the charts with Monster Hunter Generations (Check out my review here!)
