NPD: The Xbox One Was The Top-Selling Console In July

by Suriel Vazquez on Aug 11, 2016 at 01:24 PM

Although official NPD numbers for July have not yet been released to the public, Microsoft has already released a statement saying the Xbox One was the highest-selling console in July in the United States (the only retail region the NPD reports cover).

This is the first time in several months that the Xbox One has outperformed the PlayStation 4 in sales. It's important to note that this lead was not caused by the Xbox One S, the 2TB launch edition of which launched on August 2. The full public report will be released next week, with a week offset to account of the new inclusion of digital sales.

The 500GB and 1TB versions of the Xbox One S will launch on August 23. You can read Andrew Reiner's review of the Xbox One S here.

Our Take
I would have expected sales to have dipped in the month of July in anticipation of a console refresh, not increased enough to surpass the competition. This bodes well for Microsoft going into August and the fall sales season.
