Destiny Website Confirms Rise Of Iron For September 20 On Xbox One And PS4

by Mike Futter on Jun 08, 2016 at 08:07 AM

It looks like Activision has goofed a bit. The official Destiny website has confirmed that the next expansion is Rise of Iron ahead of a live stream taking place tomorrow, June 9.

And while the name seemed a lock based on multiple leaks, the website also confirms a release date. The next Destiny expansion will be out on September 20.

Further, the blurb on the front page only refers to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. At E3 last year, we spoke with Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg about if or when Bungie would have to leave last generation behind. It seems the answer is pretty clear now.

We’ve reached out to Activision for more details. We’ll update should we receive a response.

Update: Even more information has emerged via the Singapore version of the Xbox.com website. Rise of Iron will require both the Destiny base game and The Taken King expansions in order to play.

Further, the add-on will broaden the explorable territory on Earth in Old Russia. Players will visit a zone called The Plaguelands with Lord Saladin, the character who runs the occasional Iron Banner tournaments.

Here's the full list of items included in the Xbox.com listing:

  • New Story Campaign & Quests
  • New Armor and Gear
  • New Weapons
  • New Raid
  • Maximum Light Increase
  • New Strike
  • New Plaguelands Zone & Social Space
  • New Crucible Mode & Maps
  • New Enemy Faction and Bosses

We'll know more about just what these items mean, how high the light level cap is being raised, and what the new strike entails tomorrow. Again, we'll update should we receive a response from Activision.

Our Take
The marketing material leak was out of Activision’s control. The Google ad was a slip-up. This mistake leaves Bungie in a tough place. Do they stay the course or explain today why last-gen consoles aren’t getting the update (if that is, in fact, the case)?
