Final Fantasy VI Is Coming To Steam, But It’s Not The Best Version

by Mike Futter on Dec 08, 2015 at 07:06 AM

Square has been on a roll, bringing a number of its current and back catalog games to Steam. One of the more anticipated entries, Final Fantasy VI, is finally on its way soon. Unfortunately, it might not be the version you want.

Instead of bringing over the classic visuals from the SNES original or the also impressive Game Boy Advance iteration, Square is using the mobile edition as the template. The graphics have been rounded out with deep black outlines.

For those looking to wrap themselves in a nostalgia blanket, the core elements are still in place. It just won’t look at all like you remember it. If you're still on board, it will be out on December 16. No price is yet listed, but other older Final Fantasy titles list for about $16.

Our Take
At a time when developers are scrambling to emulate the look of 16-bit RPGs, the visual changes seem ill-advised. Even the classic Final Fantasy font is gone in favor of one that lacks any character and looks too slick. Please, Square Enix, give us our original sprites back.
