[Update] Driveclub PlayStation Plus Out Tomorrow, Offline Mode Only At First

by Mike Futter on Jun 24, 2015 at 04:25 AM

Update 3: Sony has shared more details about the PlayStation Plus version. All members will be able to download the game starting tomorrow, June 25. However, only the offline mode will be available.

Evolution is concerned about the servers, and will therefore be granting online access to players slowly. "We have to take this precaution because Driveclub connectivity is demanding for a multiplayer game, with countless ever-growing social connections across clubs, challenges, multiplayer, and hundreds of thousands of dynamic leaderboards and activity feeds," writes Sony president of worldwide studios Shuhei Yoshida.

There's no specific timetable for bringing the entire community onboard. We'll monitor the situation once the online community starts to grow from the influx of PlayStation Plus members.

Update 2: Following the disappearance of the PlayStation Plus edition of Driveclub, the game's official Twitter account clarified what had happened. "Store update today with the DRIVECLUB PS+ Edition was premature. The servers aren't ready yet, so it's been removed while we get them ready," the account said in one tweet. The account followed with, "We're preparing to launch DRIVECLUB PS+ Edition & will have news for you soon."

Update 1: That didn't last very long. Sony has pulled the PlayStation Plus version for the PlayStation Store for now. We're trying to find out what's going on, and we'll update should we receive a response.

Original Story:

Sony has finally made good on its promise to deliver a PlayStation Plus version of its 2014 racer, Driveclub. The title was originally supposed to launch alongside the PlayStation 4 in November 2013, but faced a number of delays and, eventually, a rough release in October.

Now, eight months after the full game's release (and nineteen months after it was first due), the PlayStation Plus edition is finally available. It includes all features from the full game, including multiplayer, solo mode, events, customization, and photo mode.

You can create your own races on the 13 tracks in India, which is one of the game’s six locations. You can also have 15 cars in your garage, and access to the entire set of trophies.

In order to get 40 additional cars, the full 65 tracks, and the single-player campaign, you’ll need to purchase the full version. For more on Driveclub, check out our review.

Our Take
It would have been very easy for Sony to cut its losses and tell fans that the PlayStation Plus version wasn’t coming at all. While this will likely have minimal impact on sales and low uptake by users, it is a promise fulfilled.
