Sony Announces 20.2 Million PlayStation 4 Consoles Sold

by Mike Futter on Mar 03, 2015 at 11:17 AM

Sony announced today that it has sold over 20.2 million PlayStation consoles worldwide as of March 1. This number updates the most recent sell-through figure of 18.5 million provided in early January.

Sony and Microsoft have been in slugfest over console sales, with current-generation hardware outpacing PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 sales. According to the NPD group, new hardware is selling 60 percent faster in the United States when compared against the same point in last-generation’s life cycle (Source: NPD).

"We are so grateful for the enormous support from PlayStation fans worldwide, and we are truly humbled that gamers around the globe have continued to select PS4 as the best place to play," said Andrew House, President and Global CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. "We remain steadfast in our commitment to deliver unique and interactive entertainment experiences powered by the network and the PS4 system's deep social capabilities."

Our Take
Sony timed this announcement alongside the Project Morpheus stage presentation taking place at GDC right now. Whether these two events are linked by more than desire to build a critical mass in the news cycle isn’t clear quite yet.
