Power Rangers Fan Film Trades Up Campy Fun For Violent Katee Sackhoff

by Mike Futter on Feb 24, 2015 at 05:31 AM

I am just a hair too old to be a true Power Rangers fan. When I was in high school I watched the show ironically. As an adult, I delight in my son’s enjoyment of the super-powered teens with giant robots and cool weapons. He’s not allowed to watch this version of the Rangers.

The video below, which stars Katee Sackhoff as original pink Ranger Kimberly and James Van Der Beek as second red Ranger Rocky is ultra-violent. It’s dark, it’s brooding, it’s even a little disturbing (oh, and you should know that it is absolutely not safe for work due to nudity and graphic violence).

The short was directed by Joseph Kahn, who says that this isn’t a pilot or a planned series. It’s strictly a one-off fan tribute that isn’t endorsed by Saban or Lionsgate.

If Lionsgate rings a bell, it’s because the studio just made a major investment in Telltale Games. The two will be working on a new IP “super show” that combines television and gaming.

Lionsgate is also working its own reboot of the Power Rangers. With the studio’s newfound interest in gaming, we wouldn’t be at all surprised to see new games featuring the colorful teen heroes. And after watching Kahn’s work, we kind of hope that the studio considers an M-rated version.
