Dragon Quest X MMORPG Ported To 3DS Using Cloud Streaming

by Harry Mackin on Jul 09, 2014 at 09:27 AM

Square Enix recently announced that Japan-only MMO Dragon Quest X will be ported to the 3DS by using the same streaming technology that the mobile version uses to access the game. The non-native support, based in cloud space, will allow for cross-platform play across the Wii, Wii U, smartphone, and PC versions of the game.

Like the mobile version, the 3DS will have access to the full MMO space, making it will be possible for players to join one another and play the game together on any of the different devices Dragon Quest X is available for. The 3DS version will release in Japan on September 4 for 3,800 yen ($40), and will include a redemption code for 60 days of free play upon purchase, after which the game will require the regular subscription fee of 1,500 yen ($15) a month.

Dragon Quest X released in Japan for Wii on August 2, 2012, for Wii U on March 30, 2013, and for Android on December 16, 2013, and has been quite successful. There are still no announcements suggesting that the MMORPG will ever come west.

Our Take
Ignoring the depressing fact that we’ll probably never see a port of this game stateside, it's always really exciting to see cross-platform play. Utilizing cloud streaming this way could open the gate for all kinds of exciting possibilities, both in the MMO space and beyond. I don’t know if competing console or console-to-PC online cross-play outside of a few MMOs will ever become the norm for business reasons, but it seems like it’s closer to being a reality now than ever. In the meantime, it's commendable that Square Enix seems dedicated to allowing its MMO players the opportunity to play with their friends, regardless of which way they're playing.
