Assassin’s Creed Unity Release Date Revealed

After this morning’s reveal of Assassin’s Creed Unity gameplay, Ubisoft’s press conference gave us another glimpse of the game in action – a different gameplay demo from Microsoft's press conference. We also learned that Unity is headed towards a release on PS4, Xbox One, and PC on October 28.

Ubisoft's presentation opens with a dramatic new trailer that echoes some of the reveals from previous games in the series  with a bird flying over the scene of the setting. The trailer showcases the cooperative multiplayer component of the experience as the team of assassins participates in an assault on a courtyard held by the military. It ends as the assassins leave the soldiers' commander to the mercies of a large crowd.

The live gameplay demo that followed sees our assassin moving through the streets of Paris in the year 1793. A thrilling opening parkour free-climbing descent opens the sequence as the main character moves down a building, showing some cool advancements to the climbing mechanics. As the demo continues, the assassin moves seamlessly between the outside and several indoor locations. The indoor elements of the game seem to be more significant than in previous entries.

Different missions in the world can be found as you wander, and each is labeled with a different number of maximum players. A feature was shown off that allows the player to pull up major map icons on the screen in front of them without having to go to the map.

The battle system appears to draw heavily on the model established with Assassin’s Creed III and IV, with a strong focus on counters and observing enemy attacks to choose the right buttons to press.

As the assassin wanders, one of the most impressive visual feats is the huge number of characters onscreen at one time. The crowd around the sight of a guillotine execution is remarkable and diverse, with literally dozens of independently moving characters involved in the action.

As the demo closes, our main character leaps off the top of guillotine and assassinates his target. As the crowd scatters and the camera pans back, we see the other three assassin players enter the field.

Unity seems to be taking full advantage of the next-gen exclusivity to show off some incredible tech.

We hope to see more of AC Unity on the show floor, and we'll update with additional details if we learn more.
