Star Wars: Attack Squadrons X-Wings Its Way To Cancelation

by Mike Futter on May 23, 2014 at 09:48 AM

After a short-lived beta period, Area 52 Games and Disney have pulled the plug on Star Wars: Attack Squadrons. The title was first revealed in December 2013, when Disney invited players to join the beta.

A message on the game’s Facebook page and in-game has notified fans of the cancelation. “We want to thank all of the fans who participated in the closed beta of Star Wars: Attack Squadrons,” the statement reads. “After much consideration, we have decided to cease development so that we can focus on other Star Wars game experiences. We truly appreciate the time you spent engaging in the beta.”

Star Wars game development has branched following Disney’s deal with EA. While the latter will be handling AAA console and PC titles, Disney is still handling more casual experiences. With EA and DICE hard at work on Star Wars: Battlefront, there is still hope for satisfying space combat in the Star Wars universe.

Our Take
This is disappointing, as X-Wing was one of my favorite experiences in the Star Wars universe. I was hopeful that Attack Squadron might fill that hole in my life. Pulling the plug on a game isn’t all bad though, especially if it wasn’t shaping up well. This move may have saved jobs in the already beleaguered Disney Interactive division.
