Mortal Kombat Movie Director Leaves The Project

Kevin Tancharoen, the creator and director of the Mortal Kombat Legacy web series, was supposed to direct the upcoming Mortal Kombat film, but he recently revealed that he was leaving the project.

The movie was initially reported on in 2011, with a tentative 2013 release date. The movie was rumored to follow the story of a grocery store clerk who discovers he has super powers. Yesterday Tancharoen tweeted that he was no longer involved in the project.

It's unclear if Tancharoen is leaving just the film behind, or if he is leaving the Mortal Kombat franchise altogether.

Our Take
Tancharoen's directorial resume is surprising. He's not a film maker you would expect to have any interest in Mortal Kombat based on directing things like Glee: The 3D Concert Movie, Fame, and The Pussycat Dolls Present: The Search for the Next Doll. That being said, he is clearly passionate about the franchise. His efforts and success with the Legacy web series are all based off of Mortal Kombat Rebirth, a short film that he self-financed just because he wanted to make some live-action Mortal Kombat. He seems like the best fit to direct a Mortal Kombat film, and I am curious who could replace him.
